(Hazel)
The sound of fire intensified. And I knew my dad was up there, we all knew that. I wondered if someone else was up there with him. The thought of it scared me. I finally decided to speak up."We can't just sit here and wait for my dad to get burned to death!"
"He's my dad, too," Jarod said quietly.
I looked at my little brother.
"I know, Jarod. Don't be scared. It's okay." I tried to comfort him, but I wasn't so sure it was working.
"I have to go. We can't just stand around here panicking. Sooner or later the fire's going to take Dad, and then it's going to take us. My mom looked concerned, but didn't object.
"You guys stay here with Jarod, and I'll go." I started to lift the latch door.
"Wait," Lacey called out, "I want to come with you. Two heads are better than one. Plus, you haven't had the self-defense training I've had."
I smiled. Lacey was such a good friend, and I would be devastated if anything happened to her, but it was stupid to go out alone, I now realized. We felt around the metal latch on the back of the bookcase/door, making sure it wasn't hot. It wasn't, so we pushed it open and scurried across the rest of the basement and up the stairs. I cracked open the door and peeked out. It looked safe enough. I took a deep breath and stepped out.
"Let's look for the fire, and then my dad," I said softly. I took my phone out and called him. Of course there was no reply. It went straight to voicemail.
"UGH!" I groaned aloud-a little too loud.
"It's okay, but let's hurry," Lacey said motioning towards the next room. There was no sign of my dad anywhere, and we couldn't even tell where the fire was coming from anymore.
"Dad! Dad!" No answer.
After several minutes of searching and calling, we finally decided to give up. Just as we were about to go back to the annex, we heard a noise. It sounded like someone clearing their throat. We turned around, wide-eyed to find someone, not my dad, standing before us.
