This chapter is really weird the ways it is set up and it goes by fast, so sorry, but I hope you enjoy the plot! I will try to make the next chapter better.
-Annie
“Now you can’t ride the dizzy rides straight in a row.” Nathan says pouring out all the information he knows on the rides at Steel Pier, while we stand in line for the Freedom Flyer, which is a very high ride shaped like a circle and you swing left and right very high while you spin. “Unless you like to get dizzy but I remember one time you got sea sick and through up in the ocean, so I don’t think you like being dizzy, -so after this we should go on the carousal because it’s not that dizzy,” When Nathan gets bored he talks on and on and right now I am not even listening to him. “June!”
“Huh! What?” I say jumping.
“Are you even listening to me?” He says staring at me. I laugh at him.
“No, you are talking too much.” I tell him the truth because he knows that sometimes he talks too much.
“Right sorry” He says and I pat him on the back then lean my head on his shoulder.
~
“What do you want to do next?” I say while eating an elephant ear and nachos with Nathan for lunch.
“The only rides we have left to ride are the Slingshot and the Ferris Wheel, I think it will be dinner by the time we are done with those, so we can go out to eat before picking Holden up.” I forgot Holden was at the Kate’s house, and I miss him, but dinner alone with Nathan would be great.
“Sounds great!” We clean up the table we were at, and start walking towards the Slingshot ride.
“Are you scared?” Nathan asks me as the line for the ride comes into view, “Have you done this before?” He asks and I shake my head, no.
“It looks fun.”
“Yeah, but are you scared?” I look up at the ride. Two people get in and a tall man closes the door on the ball and goes over to the button that slings the ball into the air. I watch as the people go flying into the air and screaming. It looks safe, so why am I worried?
“Yes, just a little though, and that’s the truth.” We join the line of about twenty people which means the ball will go in the air ten times before we get to go on it. The people that just went on it are walking out of the white gate surrounding the ride as the next two people walk in.
I watch as everyone goes up screaming and hollering. Suddenly it is our turn to get in the ball. The tall man sticks his hand out, so we can give him the tickets. I get in the ball and Nathan takes my hand, and I try to stop it from shaking, but it’s too late, he knows I am scared.
“Hey, you will be fine.” I nod my head and watch as the man pushes the button and we sling in the air, I just smile and holler the whole time. Nathan just screams ah the whole time and laughs. I realize that I am very lucky to have a friend like Nathan. I am at a tough point in life that I don’t think any girl my age has gone through, so Nathan is helping by taking me somewhere fun to get my mind of everything.
~
“Did you have fun today?” Nathan asks when we get settled into the Ferris Wheel.
“Yes, I just miss Holden. I know it’s only be a day, but I just want to know he’s safe.” I answer honestly.
“I get that if you want we can get Holden before we eat dinner.” I love that Nathan always wans me to be happy no matter what.
“No! I want it to just be you and me, so we can talk.” I say.
“Well I can text Kate if you want.”
“Please.” Nathan pulls out his phone and starts to text Kate. I stare into the sky and take this moment in and think about my life. Everyday can’t be like this; having fun with Nathan feeling safe without the Tigers bothering us. I am just a kid sooner or later they will find my family and we will no longer be safe. I decide to stop think about it, and talk about it later with Nathan.
“What are you thinking?” I shake my head realizing we are still on the Ferris Wheel.
“Oh…uh I will tell you later. I don’t want to talk about it now.” Nathan mummer ok and I look at the sky again.
“It’s a beautiful day.” I say. The sky is still clear and the sun is shining bright. He takes my hand, and I let him.
“Yeah I think I will take this moment to get a tan.” Nathans says after a while, and spreads his body out and his hand hits my face.
“Ow! Get off me!” Nathan gets off me as the ride stop and we get out.
~
Nathans phone vibrates and he takes it out. I don’t have a phone anymore because the Tigers can track me so I through it down a drain in the street.
“Kate and Holden are fine.” Nathans says still looking at his phone. I nod. A huge relief flows through me.
“Good!” We pull up to Olive Garden and get out of the cab. We called in a head of time, so it only took five minutes till our table was ready when we arrived. The place was packed, but of course it was it’s a Saturday. We get seated and I start looking through the menu.
“Hi, my name is Caleb and I will be your waiter today. Can I start you guys off with drinks? Are you parents here?” Our waiter says holding a note pad in his left hand and a pen in his right.
“No, it’s just me and her, and I would like a cherry coke.”
“Water, please.”
“Ok! I will get you bread sticks and your drinks for you.”
“Thanks.” Nathan says. “Alright, what is on your mind?” I put the menu down. I do trust Nate, but I also love him and would hate to put him in danger, and I don't want him helping me because it would put him in danger. I know Nate and he is going to take my necklace or something. After today I want to provide for myself. I can do it I got most of the money my dad had.
“Look. One of my rules is that you don’t help me. Sure you can help me find places to stay or make sure I am safe once in a while, but if you help me it will put you in danger. Either way one of us is in danger, and this is my problem, so I will be the one in danger. I will pay for my food, shelter and clothing.”
“I get that, but I can handle having the necklace.” He fights back just like I expected. I take a deep breath and respond.
“The Tigers will still think I have it. What do I tell them that you have it? Because that would put you in a lot of danger and they will go after both of us.” I say as calmly as I can. The waiter takes our order then we continue our conversation.
“Why do you keep it anyway?” He asks.
“Because my dad said! There is very important information on this.” I point to my necklace which is under my shirt. “He said that once I am older I will find a way.” The waiter come up and gives us our food.
“Find a way to what?” A tear roles down my face.
“I don’t know. He said it right before he died and couldn’t tell me the rest.” There is a long pause, and we eat. I had chicken and he has spaghetti. I hate that he is not letting me do this on my own. I can do it; I am the same age as him. He is so over protective.
“You can’t do this alone! You’re too young, and I know you can’t turn to many people, and you don’t want anyone to get hurt, but you can’t do it alone! I am going to help you.” I says harshly, and that was it I grab my things.
“Stop being so over protective you are not my father!” I yell and everyone stares at us as I leave to go get Holden.
