"Bye Sadie see you tomorrow!" I called back as I walked down her driveway. She waved back.
A rosie tint flooded the sky. I looked down at my watch. 5:45. Hopefully I'd get home before the curfew. I decided to take a shortcut through the barrens, usually I didnt come this way alone, preferring to have Sadie with me.
I hopped over fallen branches and onto stones across streams. Birds screamed their songs in the air, animals rustled through the trees and bushes. I swore I even saw a fish pass me by. I was almost clear of the barrens when I heard it. A growl.
I spun around dropping my bag of over night clothes (I had spent the night before at Sadies) I took a few steps closer, curiosity taking over me.
Another growl. This time from behind me. I spun around once more, a gasp escaping my lips.
Standing before me was..a wolf. I had never seen one in person before but I was sure this was it. A great grey, white and brown Timber wolf. It snarled revealing long hooked yellow fangs. It had glowing red eyes that caught the sunlight. It took a step forward. I took a step back.
"S-s-stay back w-wolfy," I said gingerly. Another step. I took several steps back, hitting the tree behind me. My hands snaked the trunk as fear rose and bubbled in my throat.
"H-Help!" I yelled. Though I didnt excpect any answer. The wolf leapt at me, in a split second I jumped out of the way. I faceplanted in the dirt. Leaves crunching under my body as part of me realized that this wasnt a dream. I scrambled to my feet and bolted ahead of me. I heard the large paws of the wolf pound into the soft forest floor. My breathing quickened and I kept yelling;
"Help! Please!" A tear rolled down my cheek. I wasnt too athletic and I was running out of stamina. The wolf on the other hand was not. As it got faster I got slower. The barrens thinned out and I realized that I was approaching the agricultural part of Derry. I kept running feeling a cramp emerge in my side.
Just keep running just keep running
I felt my foot collide with a root and I came tumbling forward, my ankle twisting as I called out in pain.
BAM!
A gunshot rattled and echoed throughout the forest. I rolled over on my back and watched as the bullet slammed into the shaggy, thick fur of the wolf. It cried out in pain and hobbled away, its gleaming eyes trailed on me, anger flashing across them. I watched as it disappeared. I turned around sitting up.
A boy walked over to me and held out a hand, the other gripped the handle of a police issued hand gun. I took the boys hand, it was sweaty. He pulled me up. A look of pure adrenaline almost jumping off his face. His shirt and skin was streaked with dirt. Sweat almost plastered his long hair back. I had to stop myself from wrinkling my nose. Ew mullet. It took me a bit (several awkward seconds of silence) to realize the boy before me was Henry Bowers.
"T-Thanks," I stuttered out, I felt awkward in his intimidating gaze.
"You Owe Me," he said simply.
He seen my confused stare.
"I saved you, now you owe me,"
"Owe you what?" I asked
He shrugged and turned around, beginning to walk away. I followed him, one hand gripping my cramped side.
"Why is there a wolf around here? Why do you have a gun?" I asked. He looked at me annoyed.
"Look i dunno why there was a wolf here and I dont normally save people so why dont you shut the fuck up and stop asking me questions, alright?"
"Okay,"
"Give me your name and number,"
"What?" I asked. He rolled his eyes.
"You. Owe. Me. If I can't find you how will you repay me," he said as if he was explaining this to a toddler.
Reluctantly I gave him my name..and number. Though I hoped he never called since my mom would have a fit if she was the one to pick up the phone.
"Alright y/n," he said "Ill see you later. Oh by the way, this is private property so I'd leave if i were you," he waved the gun in the air, "Or I have the right to shoot you,"

Many things were swimming through my head by the time I got home, which ended up being an hour after curfew since I had the bright idea to go back to get my clothes (in my defense my favourite shirt was in there).
My mom sent me to my room and thats where I was now, laying on my bed staring at the ceiling.
I had so many questions.
Why was there a timber wolf in the barrens?
Why was there a wolf in Derry in the summer, in daylight?!?
Why did Henry have a police issued gun?!?
Why was Henry in the woods with the gun?!?
And...what do I owe him?
