I awoke to the sun on my face and the smell of coffee. She was standing there looking down at me an annoyed look on her face as she handed me a cup of coffee. I took it quietly not knowing what to say as she turned and went back in the house leaving the door open I guessed her way of inviting me. I stood slowly heading inside the house shutting the door softly behind me making sure to lock it before trying to find where she went. I could hear the faint click of the mug hitting a table as I slowly walked forward making me way into the kitchen to see her sitting at the kitchen table still in a cute little tank top but with a set of fuzzy shorts on now instead of just her panties. I sat across from her drinking the coffee she had given me tasting the cream and sugar she put in it trying to mask the biter burnt taste of the coffee itself.
"Your late" she whispered softly her head still hung looking down into her mug
"I was shot I'm sorry I was late" I snapped back more than a little angry
She was silent for a long while after that the tension thick enough you could feel it. It wasn't until we both heard the sounds of Sarah stirring upstairs that we moved. The sudden clarity made me realize I still had my AR slung across my back. As I stood and turned to see the closest thing to family as I had ever known, that blonde hair and innocent baby blue eyes of a child, Sarah came down the stairs in one of my old shirts, the ragged grey fabric hanging down to her knees as she stumbled still half asleep into the kitchen the smell of coffee letting her know the rest of the house was awake. She found me and reached up childishly. As I stooped down to gather the small child in my arms I could feel her little hands gripping the sling across my chest as I held her tiny frame to my chest, her head on my shoulder those innocent eyes still half closed.
"That girl thinks the world of you..." Melissa whisped softly as she came to stand behind me looking over the rifle on my back "...the way her eyes light up every time she speaks your name, I never seen someone so idolized to a child and yet here you are walking around with a rifle, a gunshot wound, and clearly in organized crime."
The tone in her voice was one of odd respect and yet disgust, one I had heard a so many times in my life. Yet oddly this time it filled me with shame.
"I dont know what to say to someone who doesnt know how life is here." I spat back angry that this outsider could dreg up such feelings in me.
"Then tell me...." Her voice was soft as she near whispered those words to me. I could only sigh as I nodded and motioned to the living room with my head, a quick yet gentle little twitch. I carried Sarah with me before laying her down in a chair near the couch, leaning my rifle against the side of the couch as I sat waiting for her to join me. She kept her eyes down as she sat playing with the hem of her tank top. "What are you?" she mumbled softly keeping her eyes cast down and away.
"I am the alpha of omegas, I protect my brothers and sisters from those who would see us remain weak, broken and downtrodden."
"Speak normal Danny."
"I run a gang of people like me mostly homeless kids or ones that come from a broken home, we mainly act as mules or couriers for larger gangs but we have a small processing and disturbing operation running to. We stick together and survive as best we can with each other because we have no one else"
She looked up at me, with such an expression on her face I will never forget....
