The walk home gave me time to think. That's never been a good thing. My thoughts were foggy at best, the hangover still turning my head into a pounding drum, but even in this haze I could still see the few things that haunted me. As much as I hated the world, the lives I plucked from it this haunted me.
I replayed that night in my head....
It was a raid like any other, a quick smash and grab, jumping in and out to get our hands on gun, drugs and anything valuable in the Brotherhood's warehouse. A tip off from the crooked pigs in my pocket let me know that the brotherhood was hiding a choice set of wheels in their pens. But I knew we could have put them to greater use. A nice soild half dozen street bikes with as many hiden compartments as horses. There wasnt supposed to be anyone there. The cops were watching the place and scared off the pussys a few days before. I never thought they would have holed up waiting for help...Jake, Marcus and myself went in, barely armed, ready to make a big pay day. Stumbling around like fools in the dark, laughing, half drunk, thinking about where we would go and what we would do with this bikes. Ready to blow the hell outta this slum and make our way somewhere nicer.
The first shot rang out and shattered the night, sending up sparks near my feet. We all scrambled for cover and started firing blindly back into the darkness. I heard him before I saw him, a dark flash past a window. I shot blind, not dreaming I'd hit anything, let alone land a lethal shot. I dashed over to the window calling out to Jake to bring me a light. He came over and shone the light on a brotherhood member. My shot caught him on the side of his neck, more of a graze than anything but it was enough. I could hear him rasping for breath, his shaking hands clenching over the wound, blood flowing like water behind his fingers. I knew this would be a slow and painful death, but he had earned it.
Jake....he was only a kid...stupid fool ran over and tried to help him. Markus just laid his hand on Jake's shoulder and pulled him off. I was pissed, I wanted this kid to suffer, to pay for trying to kill me and mine. I had never been more thankful that I bought a pair of steel toed boots as I was that moment. I brought my foot down on the side of his head, his skull caving in under my foot. It was a quick death and more than he deserved.
"Hey! Wait!" someone called from behind me. The shout thankfully bring me back to realilty.
I turned in time to see that same girl running down the street after me, my phone in her waving hand.
"You forgot this...and umm...your girlfriend texted you" She said in a hushed whisper.
"Girlfriend?" I asked, more confused about her being here than what she said.
"Sarah" she mumbled, her eyes cast down to the sidewalk.
I couldn't help but laugh as she said this.
"No, no no, oh dear god no!" I laughed "She is my daughter"
"Daughter!" she squeaked, clearly the one surpised now
"Well, kinda..see shes an orphan and I took her in so I act like her pa...does that make sense?"
She nodded and raised her eyes to mine. I saw something new in her eyes...a new fire.
"Can I meet her?"
I was surpised by her request and I didn't know what to say, but when she batted those wonderous baby blue eyes at me I caved like a house of cards.
"Of...of course" I mumbled as she slided her arm around mine, and we started back down the street, heading back to my little shack
