Saving skies

Chapter 3

I wake to the slamming of the front door. Sitting up quickly, I turn my head to look around the room. My phone is in the charger; my bag is on the floor at my feet. My head rises to see a new boy walking through the kitchen. Not knowing what to do, I lie back down and pretend to sleep.

“Damn, Nick! Stop eating all the Doritos!” He shouts over in my direction. I stay still and silent.

“Mate, if I can’t make my nachos you know I will starve. Wake up and drive me to the store!” He says as he walks from the kitchen towards me. Crap, what do I do?

“Bryce! Shut up I’m awake ok!” Nick groggily speaks as he walks out of his room from the hallway. He stops at the end to see Bryce staring at me with a confused expression. “Oh” he mumbles. I close my eyes fully before anyone realises I am awake. This could decide whether or not I can stay here another night.

“Since when do they sleep on the couch after you’ve fucked them?”

“No! Mate, I haven’t done anything to this one. She had no place to stay”

“So you offered her our couch?”

“Yeah, I couldn’t just leave her! She would have slept in the field if I didn’t bring her home!”

“And you haven’t fucked her?”

“Nope”

“Not like you to keep your dick in your pants”

“Shut up”

I decide now is the time to ‘wake up’. Fluttering my eyes open, I sit up on the couch and yawn.

“Morning beautiful” Nick says to me, winking at me.

“More like afternoon” Bryce scoffs. Bryce is attractive. I mean really, drop dead supermodel attractive. He has a strong jawline and sandy blonde hair. He has bright blue eyes that scan over me, and he wears a frown. He wears a fluoro orange work shirt with black shorts. From his sleeves I can see bulging muscles on his arms. My jaw has dropped and I can’t even remember what he has said.

“Hello? Earth to Anna” Nick waves hands in my face “I just said that this is Bryce, my roomie? Like I was telling you this morning”

“Oh, of course! I’m Anna… um, sorry I’ve crashed on your couch without you knowing”

Bryce continues to stare at me, until I start to feel uncomfortable.

“Ah, what’s the time?” I ask Nick, who is walking towards the kitchen.

“One thirty” He replies. It is at that point that my stomach grumbles and I realise I haven’t eaten for nearly two days. Nick smiles at me “There’s food in the fridge, if you find something good I’ll have half”

“No problems” I smile and tentatively walk into the kitchen, scouring through their pantry and fridge.  “Hey did you guys want pancakes?” I ask, seeing they have all the ingredients.

“Yeah, pancakes would be great” Replies Nick.

“Ah, I still want my nachos… Nick, can you get me some Doritos?”

“Nah, I can’t be bothered. Just eat some damn pancakes” Bryce huffs and I get the feeling he doesn’t want me around. Instead of saying anything, I proceed to making pancakes.

“I know it might seem like Bryce doesn’t want you here… but don’t worry. He’s like that with new people, he will get over it.” Nick tells me after Bryce decided to go for a run.

“Have you ever done this before?” I ask “Letting someone you don’t know stay with you?”

Nick walks to the recliner and sits down, before looking at me.
