Chapter Eight: Ashley

I stepped out of my World Civilizations classroom and pulled out my phone. I had three missed calls; all of them were from Adam. The last thing I felt like doing was talking to him. However, I knew that ignoring him was not an option. I took a deep breath and hit call.

After a few seconds, Adam picked up.“Why didn't you answer any of my other calls?”

“Hello to you too.” Why did he have to be this way? A little manners never hurt anyone.

“Yea, hey, hi, hello. What you said earlier was right. We're going to have to make this work. Are you free tonight at 8?” He said in classic Adam abruptness.

“I was right, huh? Maybe I'm free. I'm gonna need to hear you say I was right again.” I said teasingly.

The line was silent. I knew it was a long shot but I was really hoping he'd say it again.

After a minute of awkward silence, I spoke up, “Fine. I won't make you say it again. I'm free. Where do you want to meet?”

“Blue State Coffee. I'll see you then.” Then he hung up the phone.

I slipped my phone into my pocket and headed to my dorm room. How I was going to survive working with Adam, I did not know. I did, however, know that a nice afternoon nap would help out.

“Naomi! Open up the door. I need to get ready!” I yelled, banging on the door of our shared bathroom.

“Ready for what? I just saw you ten minutes ago and you looked fine.” She responded.

“Ten minutes ago I was taking a nap. I looked like a dead panda.”

“A dead panda, eh?” She opened the door. “I think that's a bit of an exaggeration.”

“Nope. I never exaggerate. Now let me in.” I said as I pushed past her. I plugged the curling iron in then pulled my hair out of it's bun. As the curling iron was heating, I started on my make-up. Usually I just wore eyeliner and mascara, but I decided I'd take my time and use eyeshadow too. Out of the corner of my eye, I could see Naomi watching me.

“Whatcha getting all dolled up for? This can't be all just for Adam.” She said, looking at me suspiciously.

“No, it's not for Adam. I just feel like looking nice.” Crap, I thought. There is no way that she is going to buy that.

“Bull shit, Ashley.” She put her hands on her hips.“You want to impress him. You like him, don't you?”

“What? Like... Adam? That could never happen. We hate each other.”

“You know what they say... there's a thin line between love and hate. And I'm pretty sure all of this hate is spawning from the sexual tension.” She said, emphasizing the word “sexual”.

Shocked, I dropped my powder causing it to spill all over the floor. I grabbed the towel on the counter and knelt down to clean up the mess.

“I have no idea what you are talking about. I do NOT like Adam and there is by NO means sexual tension between the two of us.” Okay, maybe I did want to impress him. But there was definitely no sexual tension.

Naomi started dancing around me and singing, “You like him. You like him. You like Adam. Adam and Ashley sitting in a tree, k-i-s-s-i-n-g. First comes love, then comes marriage. Here comes Ashley with a baby carriage.”
