"Phoenix, are you alright?!" Maggie shrieked, rushing to her side.
The whole crowd of students that tried out was circled around her. She unhurt, but her face was steaming red. She remained silent, still stunned. The Slytherins that were gathered at the other end of the pitch all shrieked with laughter.
A boy with chocolate brown hair was kneeling over Phoenix, his eyes holding a mysterious twinkle to them.
"Are you alright?" He asked kindly, repeating the question and holding out his hand to help her up. Phoenix looked at him, going even redder.
"I'm fine!" She spat, ignoring his hand, standing up, and dusting the sand off her robes. "But someone's not gonna be," she muttered under her breathe, stomping off towards the Slytherins and reaching inside her pocket for her wand. The crowd parted to let her through.
"What's she doing?" The boy asked, his eyes narrowing.
"Whatever it is, it's not good," Neil said as he gritting his teeth, "We'd better follow her. You know, to make sure that there's no death count..."
The Slytherins noticed Phoenix stomping towards them and started to jeer.
"Aw, Poor Firebird got hit with a bludger!" One said, false concern lacing his words.
"She didn't even see it coming! Maybe she's not cut out to be a beater!" The three laughed again.
"I'll show you a beater!--" Phoenix spat with her eyes full of loathing and started to run at them, pulling back her arm to swing; But Elizabeth caught her arm and held her back. Phoenix looked up in fury.
"Let go of me!" She said, pulling against Elizabeth's grip, but Elizabeth held fast.
"They're not worth it, Fire-Girl! You really want to let them get under your skin and give them the satisfaction?" She asked sternly, struggling to keep her arms fixed around Phoenix.
Phoenix relented unwillingly, her face still set in fury. Meanwhile, the boy that saved her strode over to the Slytherins with a stern look.
"Ten points from Slytherin! Don't make me take more." He said calmly, to the wide mouths of the Slytherins.
"What?! You can't do that!" The biggest one, most likely the ringleader, leaped in front and declared.
"Oh yeah? You deliberately launched a bludger at one of the students during school activities. As a Gryffindor prefect, I should take fifty points from Slytherin, but I'm in a good mood today, so I'll let you off with a warning shot. Now, why don't you get on with your tryouts? I'm sure you need all the talent you can get after last year's disappointment." The Slytherin crowd glared at the boy as they broke off onto the pitch.
He smirked and walked back over to Elizabeth, who stood next to Phoenix and Cillian and shook her hand.
"Thanks for filling in for me, Beth," he said smiling. "How'd everyone do? Any of the good, fresh talent that we're looking for?" Elizabeth looked over her shoulder at all the people behind her.
"Tryouts were excellent, William. I don't want to jinx it or anything, but I think we'll have a really good team this year."
The Gryffindors started to mutter.
"W...William? Like, William Gregory?" Matthew asked. William looked at him.
"Ever since I was born! Why?" He asked with a smile.
Cillian looked at Neil. "Where have you been?" He asked.
"Why haven't you been in our common room?" Neil questioned.
