Chapter Five

Brennen knew moping was pointless. All he could do was replay the stupid scene over and over in his head.

--------"Oh, you dropped this"
He turned to see his wallet on the ground, laying face open. Slightly embarrassed, he started to lean down to reach it but Colby beat him to it.
Brennen had taken notice of the thin chain running down his neck and tucking under his white shirt whilst watching the videos, curious as to what, if anything, might be hanging in the middle of it. Now that Colby was bent over at the right angle, Brennen got a clear shot of a perfectly sized golden ring swinging back and fourth because of the momentum.

That's..
But he never...

Of course he'd have a girlfriend by now.---------

That entire night had been spoilt by a singular piece of jewellry. It was dumb and childish and why couldn't he not feel this way?
This overwhelming sense of jealousy because of a ring, it made no sense. Then again, why wouldn't Colby tell him about a girlfriend of his?

He doesn't trust you.
You can't remember anything, you're so useless.

Only one sound broke him from his train of destructive thoughts

*ding*
The store's bell.

Brennen swung round, ready to greet the customer or customers walking through the door.
"Hey, welcome to-"
He stopped, stunned into silence.
Walking through the door arm in arm were Colby and Sam, both averting their gazes from him despite his half-greeting. Colby pointed to a free table in the far corner of the shop and they both headed that way.

...
What?
Why was he ignoring him?

He watched the two closely as they sat down on the padded, wooden chairs. Colby immediately put his slender hands on the table edges, just as he would when he sat across from Brennen, taste testing cakes he'd made. Brennen always assumed that they'd done that before the incident too, since Colby had settled into the routine as if it were second nature.
It was honestly cute. Just like a little puppy.
He cracked a smile, or at least the closest thing to a smile he could get right now.

By the time he focused back on the pair, Sam had already reached over and placed a hand on Colby's left. He kept rubbing the small fingers with his thumb and speaking with a soft face. Brennen felt his heart break a little at the way Colby smiled so beautifully.
Was he capable of making such a precious face around Brennen?
I'm not right for him.

He decided just to keep checking in once in a while, since this wasn't doing anything but upsetting him. In fact, doing anything but talking to fans seemed to just keep delivering him with hurt.

He saw them hug across the table, Colby looked like he was about to burst into tears.
He saw them lean into each other, and Brennen genuinely looked away. He didn't want to see that.
He saw Sam get up and go sit next to Colby, letting him rest against his shoulder.
Everything he saw made it look more and more like Sam was the mysterious ring holder who'd been able to capture Colby's heart. That killed him. They never put up their service card either, that couldn't help but spark an even greater annoyance. It felt like they'd just come to make him hate himself more and more.
Why?
What had he done?
God, Brennen was so sick and tired of not knowing a thing.

Eventually the pair got up and headed for the door, the blonde leaving a tip. He glided over, scoffing at the bills on the table.
"I don't want your dirty charity, Samuel."
Still, he reset the table, even though nothing had been used, and went to pick up the money. Through the glass he caught a glimpse of Colby walking side by side with Sam, hugging his arm as if it was the end of the world. His gaze slowly lifted from the ground and rotated to where Brennen was in the shop.
Time went still.
Colby had a pink hue spread across his cheeks and his blue eyes glossed over with fresh tears. He looked hopeful and almost sorry, if only for a moment as time began again.
Brennen didn't even get to see him turn back around as he disappeared behind  the edge of the glass panel.

He could only let out a confused wheeze, before having to steady himself against the table.
He's such a prat?

Brennen grabbed the small plate with the useless tip on it viciously, ready to smash it on the floor in front of all the fans present. But he paused as it passed his eye level.
There was a small, gold band on the white china. He recognised it immediately as the jewellery that butchered his life, yet he still didn't want to run the risk of ruining it.
As his own personal revenge, he'd keep the wretched thing instead of snapping it with his bare hands. The smaller part of his mind was telling him not to even dare messing with Colby's relationship, but the majority kept saying to keep the goddamn thing and demand to know what was going on with it. With him. With them. And with me.
He stared at it for a few more seconds before taking it and placing it in his pocket. It's not a massive deal.

"Sam, I want to leave. Please"
I started crying. This is pathetic.
"Okay, okay. Let's go"
Sam took my hand gently, leading md outside. Good, I'm away from him.
I can't make the same mistakes
He needs to be happy without me
I can't hold him back.
I don't know why, but I looked back up just to see if he was still there. He was, the same beautiful face every time.
I love him
But this is best for his future.
