I stare at the string in shock, I'm at a loss of words. Of course we've always heard of it. Teachers, parents, even other classmates like to talk about it. It's an untouchable string that unites a person to their soulmate. You can only see it once you meet them. The string can stretch, tangle... And supposedly cannot break. While it's extremely rare for these to break, it's not unheard of, and once the string breaks? You can't get it back.
The fact that my soulmate is right in front of me... It feels like I'm dreaming.
A smile appears on my face.
"We're soulmates!!" She squeals in delight, then intertwines her fingers with mine, sending a warm shiver down my back.
"So we are..." I mumble, blushing a deep shade of red and looking away. "Hey, I'm heading to highschool, you?"
"I'm a new student there! I just moved into the area. I was just ahead of you, didn't notice you until you yelled" I chuckle at that.
"Thanks to my frustration for catching my soulmate's attention huh"
"Definitely"
We walk quietly for another couple of minutes, until the school finally appears as a silhouette in the distance. Then, Clem breaks the silence.
"You know, I haven't smiled like this in a while..." Her cheery look turns... Indecipherable, she looks happy but also sad, as if her smile was masking a long held sadness.
"Me neither... I'm glad I've been able to make you smile" I squeeze her hand reassuringly. She looks back at me, making my heart speed up once again and making me fully forget the freezing cold of the, now, snow storm. Somehow I know that she'll change me, spin my world around. And I know this is just the start of it.
