Chapter Four

"The last night I cared for anyone besides myself, was that night in the hospital."

^~^

She smiled... Ame smiled... At me...

I could feel my face getting warmer every second. That's the first time I've seen her smile. I looked down at the papers so she wouldn't be able to see my face, but that failed miserably.

"Why is your face all red? Do you have a fever?" Amer asked. She leaned closer to me and put her hand on my forehead.

Her hands are unnaturally cold.

Once I noticed our close proximity I jerked back. "I'm fine."

She stared at me skeptically.

"Really."

"Okay, if you say so." She started sorting papers again.

There was an awkward silence as we sorted papers.

"So what's your favorite color?" Ame says.

"What? Why?"

"Since we have to sort papers for Mr. Martinez, we might as well talk and get to know each other a little more."

"Oh, green. My favorite color is green."

"Any specific shade of green?"

"Jade."

"Nice. Mine's ocean blue."

"Is there any reason you like ocean blue?" I ask.

"It reminds me of freedom, sort of like the ocean."

"That's understandable. I like green because, like I said, I'm a nature lover." I smiled at her.

"So you were serious about that. I thought it was part of you act."

"No, that part was real. Sitting by trees just help me calm down more."

"I see... One more thing, don't wear your mask around me. I can already grasp what kind of person you really are." Ame said.

"What? How would you know?"

She pulled a small notebook out of her pocket. It sorta looks like the notebook I have with my list... My eyes widened with realization. Wait, that is mine!

"Why do you have that? How did you get it?" I asked.

Ame smirked. "You dropped it earlier. You're just lucky it was me who picked it up. If it was anyone else, news would've spread around the whole school by the end of the day."

"Give it." I held out my hand.

"Fine. Don't worry, I won't tell." She gave me the notebook.

We finished sorting the papers right when the bell rang for break.

"Class, you're dismissed." Mr. Martinez announced.

After the class rushed out, Mr. Martinez walked up to us. "Thanks for helping me out." He smiled.

"No problem, Mr. Martinez." I say.

"Is there really a need to call me 'Mr. Martinez' when we're alone, Nephew?" He smiled. You might be a little confused, but yes, Mr. Martinez is my uncle. I only call him Mr. Martinez in school.

"Nephew?" Ame asks.

"Yeah, he's my uncle."

"That makes sense now... I thought you two looked similar." She smiled at me and Uncle.
