twenty one

I sat there my mouth gaped open slightly as I watched Laur's mom and Dad bicker back and fourth for about five minutes until she broke down and began to cry

part of me knew I should say something I just didn't know what exactly to say that could possibly ease their pain but I decided that I had to try.

"Um Mrs. and Mr. Arendse." I croaked as I stood up approaching them "I'm Anna Laurs be—"

"Best friend." Olivia sniffled "We've heard a lot about you."

I smiled slightly not knowing how to reply

"I uh, I just wanted to say I'm so sorry about what happened to Lauren but I've been talking to Dr. Fields and she's said that Laurs going to be fine."

"You hear that sweetie." John spoke pressing his lips against Olivia's forehead "She's gonna be fine."

"That's not guaranteed." Olivia muttered turning towards him

"You gotta stop thinking like that." He responded rubbing her back "Did she say anything else Anna—this Dr. Fields?"

"No, the last time I spoke with her was about two hours ago when I got the news she was going in for surgery."

Olivia's face saddened more at the statement "Can I ask you something?"

"Yeah sure, anything." I replied

She paused momentarily pondering the question before she asked

her head was hung low and she sniffles before finally saying "What happened Anna, what exactly happened? because ever since Laur started driving she was always so observant so cautious—how did this happen?"

I stared at her blankly

my voice caught in my throat

as I stared in Olivia's questioning orbs

"She was a little—well very upset with me and uh she was glaring at me and that's when um it happened."

"What?" Olivia retorted "So What you're saying is that you—you're the reason why this happened?"

"N-no." I stuttered

"That's sure as hell what it sounds like you're saying." Olivia growled "You did this you're the reason why my daughter is halfway dead what did you do?"

she was screaming now

as she sped walked towards me

I backed away

and Mr. Arendese

took ahold of her constraining her from coming any closer to me.

I didn't know what to do my eyes were watering and I looked over in the large hospital window making direct eye contact with Shawn he must've took notice in the fear in my eyes because he lunged up from his seat and ran outside.

"What's wrong?" He panted brushing past Olivia to come stand next to me "Anna?"

"S-she thinks I did this." I muttered

"Who thinks you did what?" He looked up confused his eyebrows were furrowed together for a second until he finally recognized who I was talking about.

"Mrs. Arendse." Shawn spoke "What's going on?"

"This is her fault!" She yelled "Why Lauren's halfway dead!"

Shawn fell silent at the statement

because part of him knew

like I knew

that this was

In fact my fault

I did this

Shawn and Mrs. Arendse argued for a while

her accusing me

and Shawn defending me until finally

I Interjected "She's right."

"Anna what are you doing?" Shawn quickly questioned

"No Shawn she's right this is my fault." I replied "All of this happened because I started liking you everything that unfolded tonight happened because I couldn't do one simple thing and stay away from you like Laur told me to do yes this is my fault and Mrs. Arendse I'm sorry for that I'm sorry that I was a terrible best friend and if Laur doesn't so happen to make it I'll take the blame for everything." I murmured "And I know that won't change anything but I'll do you all a favor and leave."

Nobody said anything

I turned to shawn and he looked at me sadly he grabbed ahold of my arm caressing it slightly

"You want me to take you home?"

"You know you can't drive you shouldn't even be standing up like this right now." I replied "And you should be here when Laur gets out of surgery."

"Well um I can pay for you an Uber to the bowling alley and you can drive my Jeep home that's if you want so that way you don't have to pay so much money to get you across town."

"You'd let me drive your car?" I questioned

"Yeah." He shrugged fishing his keys from out of his pocket "Its not like I can drive right now anyway but can you just do me a favor and come pick me up from here tomorrow?"

"Of course." I quietly responded taking ahold of Shawn's keys "Thank you."

"Don't thank me Anna." Shawn smiled "You mean a lot to me even if I don't show it like I should and even though these circumstances aren't ideal I think this has brought us closer together and Anna despite what you think this isn't your fault."

I fell silent focusing my attention on the ground beneath my feet

Shawn lifted my chin with his two fingers

His eyes scanned mine for a prolonged moment before he leaned in I pulled back

"Shawn they're watching." I spoke in reference to Lauren's parents

"I don't care." Shawn whispered before crashing his lips up against mine 

the kiss only lasted for a small moment

But it felt as if it lived for an eternity on my Lips

"Text me when you make it home okay?" Shawn said after we disconnected from the kiss

"Okay." I nodded "I will."

Okay guys I'm so sorry about this chapter I feel like it's really disappointing I will go back and edit it soon I know it's been a while and an update was seriously needed! But I'm so ready for a change in scenery this hospital stuff is starting to stress me out lol so that will be coming up in the next chapter I hope you guys are still liking this book!!
