Yo so it's Sirius' birthday today! Feliz Cumpleaños you dawg!

Gryffindor Boys Dormitory, Hogwarts, 1976

The four boys were sat on the cramped balcony, the smoke of their cigarettes a dull blue under the canopy of the stars. Their knees were knocking together and elbows were tucked in, mainly to keep them warm although partly to the lack of space.

Empty Firewhiskey bottles littered the space around their feet and kept clinking together every time they do much as wiggled their toes.

Remus, the tallest of the four, was sat leaning against the metal railings. His sandy blond curls fell in his eyes which were the colour of melted honey, or a peaceful sunrise on a winters morning. He was wearing a thick, cable-knit jumper with brown, leather elbow patches which looked as if even it was failing to keep him warm.

Sirius day next to him. His thick black hair fell in soft curls to his shoulders which were covered in a worn leather jacket. His steely grey eyes were looking out at the grounds beneath them clouded by the thick smoke.

James sat to his left with an arm slumped over his shoulder. His jet black hair was crumpled and messy, sticking out in weird places. His hazel eyes were beginning to strain red under his glasses. His other arm was slumped around Peter, who had fallen asleep.

"Prongs, shake Wormy. We can't have him fall asleep, I thought we were staying up all night." Sirius said with a huff.

James took his hand from round the back of Peters neck, and shook his shoulder gently. He awoke with a start.

"Mum, 5 more minutes" He said dumbly.

"The last time I checked, Wormtail, I look nothing like your mother." James retorted dryly. Wormtail either didn't hear him or pretended not to.

Peter yawned loudly and stretched his arms above his head. He made a small 'umph' sound as his back cracked. He stood up and opened the window which they had all climbed through.

"Wormtail, where are you going?" Sirius asked bluntly.

"Elephant hunting. What do you think?" And with that, he had climbed through the window and back into the warmth of the dormitory.

James moved across slightly although the balcony was still so cramped that their elbows clattered together with every movement. They lit another cigarette each, needing the warmth on the cold, November night.

"Do you think there's going to be a war?" James asked, completely serious under the dark sky.

"No, James, I think we're all going to sit and make bastard daisy chains and talk about our fucking feelings" Remus replied sardonically. Sirius stifled a laugh, aware of his proximity to James sitting next to him.

"But, in all seriousness, yes. I think there'll come a time when Voldemort will want more power. Until then, we just have to wait it out."

They remained quiet for a long period of time, James occasionally sniffling and wiping his nose on the corner of his sleeve. He too stood up, opened the window and made to leave.

"I'm gonna go and make sure Peter isn't drowning in his own vomit or some shit like that. Have fun lads." He said as he ducked his head through the window and he too disappeared into the warmth of the dormitory.

"I'm cold."

"Hi cold, I'm Remus." Sirius rolled his eyes at this although he did chuckle but it was brief.

"That meant move closer, you dick." And Remus did as he was told and shuffled closer to the raven haired boy, their thighs now touching.

"I'm scared. No, Remus, don't even think about it." He wagged a mocking finger in his face, reading the joke he was going to make. "I'm serious"

"I know you're Sirius, I have known you six years." That earned him a punch on the arm, but it was worth it. "Right okay, I'm being serious now. What are you scared about?"

"Everything. If there is going to be a war, I'm terrified. What if I lose you? Or James?"

"You won't lose me and James, I promise" Remus said, not really believing himself.

"You don't know that though, Rem! What if old Voldy attacks the school tomorrow? What if you die? You don't know so don't go making promises." He slapped his hands to his thighs with exasperation.

"I'm scared too. But we can't run around being constantly scared all the time. We can't live in fear."

"I've always said you'd make a brilliant writer." Sirius turned and flashed Remus a wide grin that he couldn't help but return.

"And I've always said you talk utter bullshit."

They laughed, the smoke still billowing around them. Remus put out his cigarette in the ash tray and instead placed his hand on Sirius' thigh. He jumped at realising what he had done and moved his hand to his own leg.

"I'm... I'm sorry."

Sirius said nothing. Instead he took Remus' hand in his own. He looked out upon the vast grounds beneath them.

"I can't run around being constantly scared, you're right. This is possibly the scariest thing I'm ever going to do, but I've got to do it." He took a breath, still looking out at the Forbidden Forest.

"I can't be scared of everything..."

He placed his free hand on Remus' jaw and moved in closer. He closed the distance between their lips and kissed him softly. He tasted of chocolate and Firewhiskey and it was nice. Sirius pulled away.

"Well, that was... that was something." Remus whispered, more into the darkness around them than to Sirius himself.

Remus reached a hand up to the thick black curls and ran his fingers through them gently. He pulled in closer.

"I've always loved your hair." He whispered.

"Yeah, yeah, so does everyone. Shut up and kiss me."

Remus closed the gap and their lips collided for the second time that night. Sirius tasted of lemon, cigarettes and a lot of Firewhiskey and it was almost numbing. When they eventually pulled apart, they rested their foreheads together.

"Happy Birthday, Padfoot"

"Thank you, Moony"
