It had been a week since I got checked out the hospital. The doctors said I would be okay, but I got pretty lucky considering it could've been much worse. I had managed to forget how it happened completely, but something told me everyone was okay with m not knowing anything. Kino and Yuto were really scared I heard from my mom, I'd been unconscious for the whole night and half of the day, but by the time my mom got there I was waking up. The last evening of my summer was spent checking out of the hospital, and getting supplies for school.
I felt my mom bump my arm, and I tuned back into the conversation. Well the room really. I'd totally forgotten where I even was. Check up, last one before I can go back to school. School. I'd already missed like 3 days.
"Okay so I've gotten her something for any pain she is feeling and sleep if she cant seem to get to sleep and stay asleep." He handed my mom the two pill bottles and turned to me with a little smile. Everyone was on eggshells for some reason, maybe my injury was a little worse than I thought.
"Okay so the good news is you are recovering a lot better than I thought you would, but the bad news is I've seen a good handful of cases just like yours. You hit your head, needed a few stitches, and are right on track to healing." I looked at him kind of funny. I couldn't figure out if I was taking it the wrong way or if he was telling me that getting better was bad news.
"Isn't that good news?" He sighed.
"It is, but every time I've seen this it has come with a catch, memory loss." My mom grabbed my hand and I was waiting for the part where he made me feel better.
"It's not big chunks of memory, just short term really, so things like school might be a little difficult when trying to recall what happened in the previous period. I won't lie it starts off a little severe, some people for the last half hour while others forget the last five minutes. There isn't a set time that we've seen people on average forgetting. You can go from remembering a day to forgetting a week, to put it in extreme terms." Previous period! I was hoping he was going to say day, but if I can't remember first period in my second period I was going to fail at school!
"I suggest writing things down really frequently or having a classmate or even yourself record classes. With what I've seen so far, not a lot of people have gotten better, but they've all done a good job managing." None of that made me feel better at all.
"Can I be excused please?" It wasn't really a question because I walked out, but I guess it was just me being polite. I shut the door behind me and decided not to go far since I probably wouldn't remember where the heck I was anyway! I turned a corner and I found myself in the front hospital entrance where I saw both of the boys walking in with their backpacks. I looked at my phone. School just got out how where they here? I ran over to both of them and tried really hard to hug them both at the same time, which made them laugh a little.
"Hey kid." I wiped my face and smiled at them both.
"What's up?" We all found a few chairs in a waiting area and sat so I could tell them the bad news.
"From what I remember, I'm going to be forgetting a lot of stuff from now on it seems like." They looked at each other then me.
"I hit my head in a weird way, so now I'll have something like short term memory loss for a little bit. The doctor said that I'm not going to grow out of it." Kino grabbed my head and Yuto smiled a little.
"You know what, that means we'll have our own Dory." I punched him in the arm and they laughed at me.
"Don't worry you're much cuter." I laughed a little and we all looked up to see my mom and they both got up to give her a hug.
"So I take it you boys skipped last period." I looked at my mom funny and checked my phone. School was out just a few minutes ago.
"You already checked the time silly." Yuto realized what he said after he said it, and Kino punched him. Same arm too.
"It's okay sweetheart." My mom grabbed my hand and Yuto hung his head. We all walked to my moms car and a rode in the back with Kino, and we all went out to eat. I wasn't really hungry I just wanted to lay down.
"Hey Yeo Na, you have a new neighbor by the way, he's the size of a tree so have fun looking all the way up." I laid my head down in his lap, and he sighed as he ran his fingers through my hair. I think he was hoping to make me laugh, but I just wasn't up to it right now. My mom and Yuto went into the ramen shop to get some stuff to go, and I laid on my back in Kino's lap.
"Do you think I'll forget you two?"
"That won't happen, trust me Yuto won't let that happen." I grabbed his hand and just traced shapes on it, messing with it to feel less awkward talking about this.
"I'm not supposed to grow out of this I'm pretty sure, so what am I going to do when you guys aren't around?" I sighed and he poked my cheeks.
"No sad faces kid, we'll help you. Plus you have a new neighbor that I bet would love to help out. Went to your house yesterday when you were napping to help you mom with cleaning and he was already there helping. He had a few questions about you and how you were doing so he seems to want to help."
"I have a new neighbor, since when?" I looked at him but he didn't look at me.
"You guys already said that huh?" I sat up and put my face in my hands. This was going to be so hard.
"Yeo Na, it'll be okay."
"You I can forget up to a week?" He pulled me into a hug and kissed my forehead.
"No one is going to leave you hanging okay." I nodded and my mom and Yuto got back in the car. It was time to go home and sleep this whole feeling off.
