"So what kind are you going to get?" Jason Dean asked his young daughter who was staring in awe at the slushee machine in the 7-Eleven.

"Strawberry." Elle said a second later, nodding her head in approval at her choice.

"Want one, dear?" JD asked, smirking at Veronica with his arm still protectively around her waist.

"Hard pass. And don't call me dear." Veronica tried to pull away but JD only grit his teeth in frustration and pulled her closer.

"What kind are you going to get?" Elle asked her father, their wide blue eyes meeting.

"Same kind I always get, blue raspberry." JD answered, smiling a bit at his curly headed daughter. "So, one strawberry, one blue raspberry and a cherry."

"You never grow up, do you, Jason?" Veronica asked in an annoyed tone.

"Come on, I know you love cherry slushees." JD chuckled, handing over the man ringing them up the money for the slushees before passing Veronica and Elle their frozen beverages.

"Whatever. Can you let me go now please?" Veronica questioned.

"You used to love when I had my arm around your waist." JD said, before taking a large sip of his slushee.

"I also used to love shoulder pads." Veronica replied, about to add on with another jab only to be sidetracked by a scream from Elle.

"Brain freeze!" Elle shrieked, grabbing her forehead with her one hand.

"That's the best part, kid." JD told Elle proudly, flashing a broad smile. Elle recovered and began to walk in front of her parents. JD turned serious and turned his face to Veronica's. "Look at what we made." He whispered.

"You didn't make her, asshole, I did." Veronica remarked. "This is the first time you've even seen her." She added.

"And who's fault is that? Hm?" JD asked, his nails digging into Veronica's hip. But Veronica didn't answer. "Yours." He growled into her ear. "You kept her away from here, where I could have found her."

"Can we go home now?" Elle asked after walking up to her parents.

"We don't have a home right now." Veronica reminded Elle.

"I meant my dad's home. Aren't we going to stay with him, mama?" Elle asked, looking up at her mother with huge cerulean eyes that always made Veronica a bit sad because they were the eyes of a dead man. But now they weren't. They were Elle's. And now JD reminded her of Elle, not the other way around.

"You are." JD interrupted Veronica, answering the question asked by their seven-year-old.

"Where are the two of us going to sleep?" Veronica challenged JD with logic.

"I've had a room set up for Giselle since I found out about her. And you can sleep with me, naturally." JD explained. He started to walk, which forced Veronica to walk with him. The family disposed of their empty slushee cups before leaving the parking lot.
