Chapter 1

I never thought it would happen. I felt like the world just wasn't real. Like I was dreaming. Like everyone and everything was there in my dream. But if I'm going to tell this story right, I start from the beginning. This is my story.

It feels like an eternity. Like how can all this start from a clover? A clover that hadn't been seen my whole life would be different. I don't even know where to start. There's so much to tell and so much for you to hear.
It was Tuesday. Tuesday March 6th. How do I remember that you ask? Why would I want to? Well I do because... Well, it was my birthday. Me, Juliet Kelson.
My mother Christina and I went to the store to buy a cake. There was something odd about the man who turned the corner. Wearing all black and held his shaven head down. There was anger in the way he walked. Fear entered my body slowly but surely.
My heart pounded the closer we got to the man in black. Me being twelve at the time, didn't know what would happen. But as he got closer the more I wanted to yell out " Mommy no! " but I couldn't. It was too late.
The man in black pulled the gun from his pocket. A bullet rang through the store. Particularly loud from where I was standing. Screams ran throughout the place.
My mother and I ran as fast as we could. My mind was racing. More gunshots. More screams. What was happening? Then after about 2 minutes of racing through the isles, my mother'a grasp loosened. She lay on the floor dying. A bullet through her chest.
" Mom! " I yelled running to her side.
" Go. " she said in a raspy voice.
I hesitated.
" GO! " she said louder her voice still raspy.
A woman grabbed my arm and pulled me.
" Run! " she told me as I was pulled.
I was so confused. Why was this man doing this? Shooting people?
Gun shots everywhere. Bodies lay injured or dead on the ground. Why did he start with my mom? Why did he have to choose my mother?
Life as I know it would be totally different now. How could this be? My mother was gone. We ran through the store like we were Olympic runners. Bullets flying through the air.
It felt like a we had been running for 100 years when we finally got out. Police rushed to my side to see if I was okay. I saw them go in and out, holding body bags. They came out with 6 injured, 10 dead... One of those 10 was my mom.
