Chapter Nineteen
The breathing was heavy. A filthy sound that brought a shiver to her flesh. Jane could almost feel the warm breath against her ear. Across her face. Over her body.
Then it was just...gone.
The person on the other end hung up so suddenly that the click made her pull the phone away from her ear. She looked at it, as though expecting it to give her some sort of answer.
Silvio's body was tense. He gripped his chair and leaned forward, as though getting ready to stand. "What happened? Who was that?"
Jane opened her mouth to answer, but nothing came out. She looked at the phone again, and then up at the waiter, who glanced at her expectantly.
She realized that, while she didn't exactly say or do anything, she probably looked a little freaked out.
Jane handed the phone back to the waiter. "Thank you."
He took it, but didn't leave. "Are you all right, miss?"
Jane nodded, rubbing the back of her neck. "Yeah, I'm fine."
She just wanted him to go away so she could tell Silvio about it. She needed to get this out of her system. Just not in public.
The waiter didn't seem too convinced. Why was it any of his business anyway? Why did he look at her, and then at Silvio as though she couldn't make up her own mind?
The man did, thankfully, leave, but not without one last curious glance her way.
Jane took a drink from her champagne flute. She needed the alcohol after all of that.
Silvio, on the other hand, wasn't ready to drop it.
"That was him, wasn't it?"
Jane nodded. "I'm kind of glad you picked up on that. I didn't want to say it out loud."
"What? Why?"
She shrugged. "I'm not...sure."
It wasn't a lie. She really didn't know why she didn't want to say who it had been. It wasn't as if she had done anything wrong. She wasn't the one who'd just made a creepy phone call.
Silvio abruptly stood.
Jane with him. She reached out, snatching his hand from across the table. "What are you doing?"
"I'm calling the police."
"And what are they going to do? It was just a phone call. Please, sit down."
His dark eyes blazed with a fire she'd never seen before. This was different from the heat he could muster when he looked at her, naked in bed. This intensity seemed almost violent. As though he could start destroying things at any moment.
She didn't want that. She wanted to have the nice time he'd promised her when they walked in here.
"I can't let this go. I need to know where that call came from."
"You and Derrick and all the private detectives you hired couldn't even track him down, do you really think he would have made the call from his home phone?"
People were starting to look at them now. Jane couldn't take it.
"Please, I want to be normal for tonight. I don't want this hanging over my head. If it makes you forget about it, give Derrick a call and ask him to look into it and we can stay here."
Thankfully, Silvio sat down. He pulled out his phone. "I'm contacting Derrick now."
Jane sat with him, relieved. "That's fine."
