6 months later:
It hadn't registered until now. Detective Sloan realized in that moment, Agent Howards was the chameleon. He had fooled them all. Tricked them into thinking he was on their side. That he had been the one killing the women. Sloan reached for her gun and saw the fear in Howard's eyes. He knew. In a race for their guns, Sloan yanked her's from her holster and felt the cold steel chill her sweaty palms.
Howards had pulled his service pistol and pointed it at Sloan. Howards grabbed Foxx and held him in front of him. Sloan lowered her gun, realizing Howards was like a cornered cat. She couldn't risk costing Foxx his life. Howards shoved Foxx forward, keeping his grip tight. Sloan holstered her gun and held out her hands. Foxx looked at her and she knew. From the first time they'd met, Foxx was her soul mate.Maddox leaned forward in her chair and looked at the book in disbelief. Soul mate? This is nothing like how it actually happened. Maddox thought as she turned the page and continued reading.
Sloan looked at the barrel of Howards gun. She'd never fired her gun before in her entire time as a cop. Yet, now she realized she was going to have to. The precinct had taken notice now. Several officers were beginning to look for shooting angles. Her own partner Gregson, was coming up behind Howards. Howards seemed to have become intently focused on her.
Sloan looked at Foxx and he signaled with a nod. A silent bond they had formed, told her, he was ready. Sloan placed her hand on her gun and Howards looked ticked.
"Don't even think about." Howards said shoving his gun into Foxx's back.
"You're not gonna walk away from this." Sloan replied, unlatching her pistol strap.
"Lower your gun and let Foxx go."
Howards looked at her, and she could see he was considering it. She didn't want to kill him.
"Detective, I'm going to kill you. And I don't care what I have to do, to do it either." Howards said, before she heard the hammer cock.
Foxx shoved his head into Howards nose and knocked Howards back. Sloan took the chance and fired her gun. The heat from the bullet reached her fingers, and she flinched.
Howards fell to the ground. A bullet through his heart. Sloan placed her gun in her holster and stared at Howards lifeless body. Foxx took her hand, the same hand she had used pull the trigger. He stepped in front of her, and she looked into his hazel eyes. In that moment, their minds clicked. He leaned closer to her and she stared at his eyes. Foxx kis-"What!?" Maddox exclaimed before tossing the book onto the table. "Best seller my-"
The doorbell rang and she sighed. One year later and the only thing Nathan Reaves could do was write a novel based on the events of the previous year. With a few different details. For instance, instead of Maddox's name being the lead Detectives name, Jennifer Sloan was the female lead. and instead of Nathan Reaves it was Jaxon Foxx. Either way, Maddox was not a big fan. Especially considering the most recent changes.
She had only bought the book out of curiosity and spite. Maddox figured it was crap, but she wanted to know for sure. Her assumptions were correct. Reaves may have delivered spectacular story and detail, but his character's continually got on her nerves. To everyone who hadn't been there that day, it was probably amazing. But the people who witnessed it, who witnessed the death of Casey Allen, didn't view it as anything but lies.
Not to mention a romance that never ever happened. Maddox climbed out of her chair and walked to the door. It was nine o'clock on a Saturday, she didn't expect anyone stopping by. The last few months had been uneventful and rather dull. Then, Reaves' book came out and her name popped up everywhere. Every reporter wanted to talk to her about the book. As if she had anything to say.
