Awake

At first all I could do was hear.  The wind was restless and I could hear the faint sound of birds in the distance.  They were the first things I could figure out.  I felt a chill and questioned with it was the wind or the fear that I had absolutely no idea where I was.  My mind was a complete blank.  I didn’t know anything.  I scrambled mentally trying to put some sort of puzzle together to figure out who I was, as it had dawned on me just now I had absolutely no clue who I was other than my name.  Kelly.  Not even a last name.  Just my first name.

I felt movement next to my.  My arm moving ever so slightly.  I wasn’t alone.  And I don’t know if that was more terrifying than not knowing who I was.  Who was with me?  Where am I?  My arm moved again and I felt the pull.  I was tied to this someone.  The metal connecting us sort of pinched my skin.

“Ow.”  I finally said when they didn’t stop and the pinching became tighter and unbearable.  I opened my eyes and the sun blinded me for a minute.

“Who are you?”  A voice asked.  I looked around and it took a second for the person that the voice came from to come into view.  I squinted my eyes a bit so I could make him out through the glare of the sun.  He was sat next to me.  Even sitting it was obvious he was sort of tall.  He had blond hair and blue eyes.  He had a lip ring in his mouth.  He was beautiful.  From what I could see of him anyways.

I literally couldn’t find words.  He sat looking down at me waiting.  I could see by his face, that was becoming more and more clear as my eyes adjusted, that he was getting annoyed.

“Do you speak?”  He asked again.

“Yes.”  I said matter of fact like.  I don’t know why but him asking that annoyed me.  I found it sort of rude.  I mean he couldn’t know anything more than what I knew could he.  There was a reason I couldn’t remember.  And we were cuffed together.  That means somehow we were connected.   “Who are you?”  I asked sitting up.  The pinching was hurting and if he moved again it would probably draw blood.

“I asked first.”  He said turning towards me more.  To be honest it was a relief on my wrist.

“Kelly.”  I said using my free hand to wrap around my stomach almost like a security blanket.  I felt vulnerable.

“Luke.”

“Do you…I mean where are we?”  I asked wanting to get out of the pleasantries and get to facts.

“I was just about to ask you that.”  He said.

“Well we need to figure out where we are don’t you think?”

“Thanks Captain Obvious.”  He said rolling his eyes.

“You don’t have to be an ass.”

“Well…Whatever.”  He said starting to get to his feet.  I decided I had probably do the same so the pinching doesn’t start again.  “There’s some woods ahead just over there.  Maybe we should head that way.  See if we can find some shelter, maybe some food.”  He pointed past me.  Once I was up I turned to look in that direction.  Our hand dangled in-between us.  I shrugged as if my opinion would matter.  He began walking and I followed behind him.

“Can you slow down?”  I asked as we trekked through the tall grass.  He was tall.  Almost a foot taller to be exact.  He was thin but his arms looked muscular.  He had a cut off t-shirt on and some jeans.

“We need to hurry.  We are vulnerable out here.”

“Vulnerable to what?”  I asked as I tried to keep up.

Suddenly he stopped and turned to face me.

“Everything, ok? We don’t know where we are.  Everything is a threat.  And until we can figure out who or what is out here we need to find a safe place ok?”  He said.  I stood staring at him.  He made sense.  And a felt like I could trust him.  I mean I sort of had to considering we were connected literally.
