Daniella
"So how was your first day?" Skylar asked as soon as I entered her house. She was sitting on the couch with Simone in her lap, braiding her hair as the TV was playing Re-runs of 'Meet the Browns.'
"Yeah Aunty Ella, how was work? Did you find a husband?" Simone asked and I couldn't help but laugh as I took off my coat and entered the living room.
"No I did not find a husband and it was great. Everyone is very nice and I think I'm going to like it there."
"That's great. Any potential husbands?" Skylar asked and before I could respond, Will entered the room and spoke.
"Why is it that you two are always trying to play match maker?" He asked before kissing the top of Simone's head and kissing Skylar.
"I just want some cousin's to play with," Simone said and I involuntarily started coughing earning a laugh from Simone, Skylar and Will.
"How about a brother or sister?" Will said looking down at Skylar and she threw her hands up in protest.
"Nope. Nope. Not gonna happen," she said and this time I was the one laughing.
"While you guys figure that out, I'm going for my daily run."
"Oh okay, well don't be too long. Remember JT is taking us out for dinner to celebrate you coming home," Skylar said and I watched Simone make a face.
"What's wrong Simone?"
"I don't like JT."
"Uncle JT Simone," Skylar corrected and Simone shrugged her shoulders.
"I like uncle JJ. He's funny," Simone said and I bit my lip to keep from saying anything. JJ had always been the ladies man. I guess nothing has changed. Heading to my room, I quickly changed my clothes from business appropriate to sweats and track jacket before heading back down the stairs and out the door. With all the preparations I had to make to make the move from New York back to Atlanta, I had neglected making the time for a daily run so after all this time, it felt amazing.
As the city hadn't changed much in the years that I had been gone so navigating my way around wasn't hard at all. Involuntarily, I had ended up in front of the community centre that held so many memories. My first dance recital.
"So daddy, where is she?" I asked excitedly.
"Where's who?"
"Mommy, duh. She said she'll be back today" I told him and his smile dropped. He lifted me onto his lap and pushed back one of the strands of hair back,
"Baby girl she isn't here"
"Nuh un daddy, she's here. She promised she'd be here"
"Baby girl she isn't here" tears started falling down my face as I tried telling my daddy that she was here. She had to be here. She had promised...
Shaking the unwanted memory from my mind, I was about to turn around when a familiar face caught my attention. JJ. He was on the basketball court with seven kids surrounding him and by the looks of it, they were having a great time. I watched for a few minutes as they played basketball and joked around before he turned to get his water and our eyes connected. He looked at me a couple of times, blinking, before pinching himself, not believing it was really me. I needed to go. He turned around to face the kids and I took that as my chance and quickly turned around, getting ready to run back home when I bumped right into someone. JT.
