Daniella
A month later
"Alright next up we have an Imani Henderson," I read from the clipboard before looking up and into the waiting room. After being here a month, I was finally able to take on patients alone and I was beyond excited. Being a pediatric doctor meant not only did I have the privilege of working with kids but I got to be the head of the foster kids care and I'm not going to lie, those kids had really grown on me. But for now, it was walk-ins.
"That's me," a little girl said shyly as she gripped her mother's hand for dear life and I couldn't help but smile.
"Perfect, let's go." I lead them to the room set up for giving the chicken pox needle and washed my hands for the third time before putting on my gloves. By the time I had picked up the needle, the little girl was freaking out and was getting ready to cry.
"Mommy no! I don't want a needle! No!" Putting down the needle, I pulled up my rolling chair closer to them.
"Imani," I called and she looked away from her mom and looked at me. "I know it looks extremely scary but can I tell you a secret?"
"Yeah."
"It won't even hurt," I told her honestly and her eyes widened.
"Really?"
"Yup and I can prove it to you. Here take a seat okay?" I told her motioning to my other wheeled chair and she looked sceptical before finally sitting. "Perfect now I'm going to get you to roll up your sleeve okay?"
"Okay," she rolled up her sleeve and I couldn't help my smile at how brave she was.
"Now I'm going to rub some magic potion on your arm so it won't hurt okay?" I told her and her eyes widened in shock.
"You have a magic potion?"
"Yup." Looking down at her shirt I noticed the princess and the frog animation on it. "It was given to me by Mama Odie."
"Really!" She said getting excited and I nodded before looking over at her mom who looked impressed. She then proceeded to tell me all about her favorite character in the movie and even begun singing the songs and I sung along with her keeping her distracted as I wiped her arm with an antibacterial wipe and gave her the needle. By the time I put the band-aid on her arm, we had just finished singing 'When were human'. Pulling off my gloves and throwing them into the trash can, I gave them a bright smile.
"All done."
"Wait really?" Imani said before looking down at her arm in shock. "Do you have magic powers too?"
"Yeah, but you can't tell anybody okay? It has to be our little secret."
"I won't I promise," she said before pretending to lock her mouth and I couldn't help the laughter that escaped my lips. Grabbing one of the lollipops that I always kept in my office, I gave her the option of which one she wanted before walking them out.
"Thank you so much. Normally going to the doctor is a pain with Imani but you made it so easy," her mom said and I couldn't hold in my smile. God I loved my job.
"That's what I'm here for."
"See you again in a few months?" She asked and I smiled before saying goodbye to Imani and her mom.
"Your really good with them," the receptionist, Raven mentioned.
"Thanks."
"Oh before I forget, Mr. Moore said that you don't have to stay late anymore. He got someone to cover that shift for him."
