Hiro slouched in the passenger seat of the van. His nose wrinkled up slightly, the lingering smell of oil and fries combining to make a mixture he'd grown used to. Scott was driving, one hand on the wheel, the other propped buy his chin. Hiro crossed his arms, brows furrowing as he tried to sort through the thoughts spinning in his head. Callaghan doing what he'd done out of necessity for his own revenge was one thing. For him to have done what he did for the sake of Hydra- it made his stomach twist in knots. He'd come so far from the angry child he once was, but he still had much to learn.
He missed Baymax.
"Hey." He sighed and looked over at Scott. The man was glancing between him and the road, frown evident on his face. "You wanna talk about it?"
"No," Hiro said, immediately finding it easier to clamp up. He was hard to read at the best of times, a genius that drowned himself in work. Despite living with Hank for a year, Hiro still found it easier to keep some secrets to himself. Maybe that was why he was so angry about what the man found. He hated being oblivious, no matter how arrogant it seemed.
"Come on, man," Scott said with a sigh, turning down another street, heading toward the bridge. The bright neon lights from San Fransokyo's buildings stretched their rays across the sky. Hiro felt a twisting in his gut and a sudden pang of guilt. He really should contact his Aunt while they were in the city, but he couldn't risk it."It just doesn't make sense," Hiro said, allowing a bit of lenience, "Callaghan and Hydra- he couldn't even stand Krei. How could he stand to work for Hydra?"
"People do stupid things when they're desperate. Especially when it comes to their kids," Scott offered, heading towards the station.
"Hydra, Scott? Hydra? This is the organization that literally worked hand in hand with some of the worst people the world has ever seen. They kill people just because they can. Callaghan was never a man like that, even when he was angry. It just doesn't make any damn sense." He punched the dashboard, angrily settling back in his seat. He heard Scott let out a long sigh, seeing his head shake in his peripheral vision.Hiro chose to turn his head, staring out of the window instead. He watched the familiar buildings as they moved by, eyes scanning the Hiragana splattered across nightclubs, Kanji decorating skyscraper panels, Katakana coiled with English to create custom logos. He spotted the familiar San Fransokyo Ninja sign, a flashing roster of players highlighting the area. Scott let out a low whistle, turning down another street.
"I never come to this side of the city," he commented. Hiro shifted and looked over at him, then leaned forward to peer out of the windshield.
"It's like two different worlds, right," Hiro asked, arms crossing tightly over his chest.
"Yeah. They really rebuilt it after the earthquake." Scott pulled into the driveway of the station, parking the van in front. Hiro stared at the glass front of the station, watching officers walk in and out. He took a deep breath, tearing his gaze away. He felt his stomach tightening in knots and he pressed his crossed arms over the pain. Scott turned the van off, letting silence settle within the interior."Well, this is our stop," he said. Hiro chewed on the inside of his cheek, trying to muster up the words necessary to express his thoughts. "Hey." A hand gripped his shoulder and Hiro jerked his head up.
"Huh?"
"I'm gonna be right there. Don't freak out, okay?" Hiro nodded, despite his obviously rattled nerves. He wasn't afraid, but he was uncertain. Scott moved to open the door and hopped out, turning to regard him. Hiro shifted and opened the door, but he left it ajar, staring at the pavement beneath them. Scott stared at him from the driver's side and Hiro could feel his eyes trying to read his expression. Hiro slipped from his chair and climbed down, holding onto the door edge and the seat. He didn't close it, but instead stared at the ugly brown material that coated the seat. He didn't know why the revelation of Hydra's involvement bothered him so much. Did he expect it of them? Yes. Of Callaghan? No. He had hope for the man his brother looked up to.
"Hey." Hiro glanced up at Scott. "What's goin' on?"
