CHAPTER FIVE

One day after school Josh and I met up to go over to my place to work on a history project. We were assigned to do a presentation on the Civil War and explain the events leading up to it.

“What about this?” asked Josh, pointing to a picture of the Boston Tea Party.

“We’re doing the Civil War, dude. This happened like a century before.”

            “Yeah. So?”

“They are not related in any way.”

“But it’s like an event that leads up to it right?” asked Josh as he stared at the book.

“No. Not at all. Not even a little bit. This is from the Revolutionary era.”

            “The what?”

“Oh dear god,” I sighed, “Have you just ignored every teacher you’ve ever had?”

Josh laughed, but I didn’t find the situation very amusing. I was really starting to rethink my choice of a partner. I read through the book some and wrote out some information that I figured would be useful. I handed Josh my notes from class.

“Here, read this. Learn it. Live it. Love it.”

Josh skimmed over the notes but quickly put them down.

“Hey what’s up with you and Carmen?” he asked.

            “What do you mean?”

“Marcy says Carmen was talking to her about how you’ve been acting weird and things feel different and stuff.”

            “I don’t know.  I haven’t changed.”

“You have been kinda acting weird though, bro.”

“Maybe I just have a lot on my mind, ya know, with soccer and college and all that crap.”

“Yeah that’s probably it. But you need to make sure your girl is taken care of or she’ll go running to some other dude”

            “She’s not going anywhere.”

            “Whatever you say, man.”

I brushed off Josh’s comments and continued working.  Dad walked in early from work.

“Hey boys,” he said flashing a smile.

            “You’re home early,” I replied.

“We got done early today. If things keep going like this I’ll be off early Friday too.”

            “Cool,” I said unenthusiastically.

“Don’t you have a game Friday?”

            “Yeah. Wow, you actually remembered.”

“Of course I remember your games! I’ll be there!”

            “Sure, dad.”

“I mean it this time, Blake. I promise.”

            “Okay, dad.”
