CHAPTER THREE
Carmen and I met Josh and Marcy at the mall on Saturday, for our double date. We were going to shop a little, eat at the food court, then go see a movie. Scratch that. The girls were going to shop a little while Josh and I hung out at GameStop. Then we were going to meet them for lunch and head to the movie. The girls took a lot longer shopping than we had expected, and there was only so much time we could spend in GameStop before the employees started to suspect something. So Josh and I left and headed to the food court to wait for them. After about 20 minutes of waiting, the girls showed up with what looked like a bag from every store in the mall.
“We got goodies!” exclaimed Carmen.
“Oh joy,” said Josh, sarcastically.
“Oh my gosh! Look what I got you, babe,” said Carmen, pulling a light blue shirt out of an Abercrombie and Fitch bag. “Isn’t it nice?”
“Thanks Mom,” I replied in a facetious tone.
“Just trying to do something nice for you,” she scoffed.
“Thanks. It’s nice,” I said in an apologetic manner.
“Did you get me anything?” asked Josh to Marcy.
“No. Was I supposed to?” replied Marcy.
Carmen and I laughed at Marcy’s reply.
“In her defense, you haven’t been dating for very long,” said Carmen.
Josh looked at Carmen with an angry look and she poked her tongue out at him. We had Chinese food from the food court and started walking to the movie theater next to the mall. As we walked something caught Carmen’s attention and she ran over to it.
“Oh my gosh, Marcy! How did we miss these?” screamed Carmen, pointing to a pair of shoes on a rack.
Sometimes her valley girl voice really pierced through your skull. I managed to drown her out sometimes, but when she screamed at the top of her lungs it was kind of difficult. I felt sorry for the other people in the mall more than me. At least I was used to it. I tried to convince Carmen not to buy the shoes, but to no avail. So after she got out of the show store we were able to go to the movie. Josh and I wanted to see the new Mission Impossible, but the girls had their hearts set on this crappy romantic comedy starring Ryan Reynolds.
“No! I will not sit through it. I refuse.” protested Josh.
“But it’s so good,” replied Marcy.
“I can guarantee you it’s not,” contested Josh. “I am not spending my money on that craptastic movie.”
Marcy wrapped her arms around Josh’s neck and whispered something into his ear that made his eyes shoot wide open.
“Okay. Let’s go watch some Ryan Reynolds!” exclaimed Josh.
“What? What did you say to him?” I asked.
“Oh nothing,” giggled Marcy. Those damn girls and their bribery.
I sat through 1 hour and 40 minutes of Ryan Reynolds making stupid jokes and feeding his lady corny lines and taking off his shirt. I wanted to punch Josh in the face for making me do this. Carmen held onto my hand the whole movie. Eventually I couldn’t even feel it anymore. I looked over at Josh and Marcy, only to catch them in the middle of a heated makeout session. I thought about doing the same with Carmen, but something inside me kept me from leaning over to kiss her. My mind wandered to the image of the guy from Dudesmeet.com. His eyes. His hair. His words that stopped me in my tracks. It made me so angry just thinking about him and his snobby ass attitude. I wanted him out of my head so I tried to stop thinking. I just kept holding Carmen’s hand and tried my hardest to enjoy the movie.
