Saviours

The marching sounds of the city watchmen grew louder. Harne signalled to Bane. The former assassin nodded, shouldering his crossbow he darted into the narrow alley to be swallowed up by the inky blanket of night. Harne turned to Kait.

"Looks like it's time to send this lot on a wild goose chase. If they want to find our little nest let's lead them to one."

Kait smiled. "We must be careful not to let them get too close. We can't afford to screw this up and get ourselves killed."

"I don't plan on it Kait that is why you are here, to boss me around as I know you like to."

"You'll get your share of bossing if you don't stop the smart remarks."

"You know over the last couple of weeks that you and Bane have been getting friendly I've noticed a lack of acid on your tongue. You may actually be quite human underneath that pretty skin of yours."

Kait turned a look of murder upon Harne. "Perhaps I should let you know what a real licking is like before you think I'm getting too friendly."

Harne chuckled. "Perhaps I was wrong. It was there all the time. Come on let's get this little surprise over and done with."

The marching steps grew louder as the unit of unsuspecting city patrol headed towards the alley where Kait and Harne waited. Just before they rounded the corner Kait took off charging out of the alley right in front of the soldiers.

"Stop in the name of the law!"

"Not in your lifetime pig!" Harne heard Kait's reply.

A half dozen soldiers took off after her, the sound of her curses fading as she led them throughout the Poor Quarters narrow alleyways. Harne tossed a rock into the remaining soldiers and quickly started walking down the alley in the opposite direction. The sound of his boots purposely loud enough to gain the attention of another half dozen soldiers that took of in pursuit.

"You there, stop!"

Several streets over Harne slowed to a walk in what was a dead end. The guards thinking they had a curfew breaker cornered were soon forced to think again as bolt after crossbow bolt plunged into their backs. With all six soldiers dead, Harne gathered up all their weapons and looked up to see Bane's retreating silhouette passing across the rooftops.

"Six down, several hundred more to go." Harne mumbled to himself as he returned the way he came.

An hour later the trio met in the underground wine cellar beneath the ice merchant, Harry Gearson's apartment. Harne had just deposited his collection of weapons to the growing pile that covered one half of the large cellar when Kait and Bane arrived both also laden with bundle of weapons.

"This should help our little group in a few nights time, Harne."

"We'll never have enough to outfit everyone no matter how many nights or weeks we keep this up, but at least this is a help." Harne replied. "It's getting late and I for one am looking forward to getting across to Thomas so I can get back here and catch a couple of hours sleep."

"There were only twenty men left out of that company and we can be sure next time they will bring plenty more men out to put a stop to this nuisance we are creating."

Kait nodded. "It's exactly what we want. Word will quickly get back to the captain on the wall that what you told him about the planned attack is accurate."

"We can only hope he is that easy to convince." Harne added.

"He will be just as long as the seeker doesn't plan on looking for me and starts asking any questions as to why I have disappeared." Bane added quietly. "Hopefully we can keep Charaz at bay as well."
