chapter 7- me vs the player

We sat in the car on our way back in silence. Scott and I were quiet and everyone else didn't ask anything. Finally, Devon tried breaking the silence by saying

"So, why did you guys stay in the woods for longer than you had to?"

Scott didn't say anything and just looked at me. I don't know how to lie! I panicked; Scott probably knew how to lie better than me. "Umm" I stalled so I could think of a reasonable and believable excuse.

"Because I.... we ran into each other and I almost fell into the river so he helped me" I said really fast.

Sia gave me a strange look but I ignored it. Everyone else seemed to accept my excuse though. When we got home, she pulled me aside and said:

"Leah, why did you lie? Tell me what really happened."

This caught me off guard and I froze. "leah" she repeated and waved her hand in front of me until I spoke up.

"Sorry" I apologized "it's just that he found out something about me and I didn't want everyone to know so I lied."

Hurt flashed through Sia's eyes and she said "so now Scott knows you better than me? I'm your best friend you can tell me anything."

"I know" I replied "it's just sort of embarrassing."

"Listen, how about I tell you am embarrassing secret about me and you tell me yours" she said tugging at her strapless blouse to keep it up.

I hesitated before saying "fine, but you go first."

"Okay..." she said blushing and looking a bit nervous. I rarely see her like this, "PROMISE you won't tell ANY living soul!" she whispered in a warning tone and I knew better than to do that.

I gave her my word and so she answered

"I'm just going to get it out of my way and say this, umm, well... I sort of... have a smaaall crush on...Jake."

My eyes bulged at those words and I gawked at her. "Jake?" I said. "Yeah" she answered. I wondered why she was shy all of a sudden, I mean when it comes to guys, Sia gets whoever she wants and is always straight forward and blunt with them. Besides she's the one who told me not to get feelings for any of them. Then I remembered Jake and Amanda at that Ice cream shop and said

"Sia, is he coming to the sleepover?"

"I think so; he said he'll be back."

"Okay well don't tell him anything about how you feel for now."

Her eyes widened "you like him??" she questioned and I realized that she got the wrong idea. Sia was known for making assumptions and jumping to conclusions.

"No way!!" I screamed. Waving my hands in front of her "it's just that I feel that he's a bit mysterious and unstable at the moment."

She narrowed her eyes at me "what do you know Leah?" she asked

I began panicking again. I really need to learn how to calm myself down at times like these. I tried putting on a casual face but I don't think it worked because the she added "and don't say you're not hiding anything or else you won't be looking like a constipated deer in headlights." She added.

Shoot! "Sia please don't make me tell you, I have to be sure first" I begged. But she kept pushing me to tell her and finally I broke and uttered quickly "I THINK JAKE IS BACKSTABBING SCOTT AND IS SECRETLY DATING HIS EX GIRLFRIEND AMAND!"
