"Congratulations." I turned around and saw Laura in her beautiful white gown. I stepped in her direction to pull her in a tight hug. The kind of hug you give when you're victorious.
"I did it. I saved my family." I squeezed my arms a fraction tighter.
Not through the best way though. I knew that. But you do what you gotta do to save your loved ones.
"The time for your next deed has started." She said as she broke the embrace. "Need those ten minutes to think?"
I nodded.
When you know you'll die soon, all you want is to do something for others.
Where else did I go wrong in life? I thought.
And then it occurred to me and I realized what time I needed to relive.
"Take me to December 16th 2012." I shouted.
"Okay then. Grab on girlie." With that, she offered me her hand.
"Can you make me fall on my ass instead of my face? Please." I said. Clasping my hands behind my back.
"Just take my hand already Hazel." A line appeared between her brows and I did as she said.
I closed my eyes and a gust of wind threw my untamed curls in the air. A shiver ran through my spine before I opened them again.
"Laura?" I shouted.
Silence.
I was still in my room. I checked the time.
12:15 AM
I saw my reflection in the mirror. A younger version of my own stared back at me. Her midnight black hair flowed over her shoulders. She had strawberry soft lips and her eyebrows were thin like a line. Dressed in a floor length gown of purple silk with a bit of sparkle.
"Ugh! I was such body goals. When did I put on those extra pounds." I growled as I noticed my figure.
I checked the date on my cell phone.
16th December, 12
I was a teenager again. Young and Ambitious.
I should probably sleep. School's tomorrow. I snorted.
"Hazel Steward if you don't get up immediately I swear I'll throw ten tons of water on you." Mom shouted.
"Ugh mom I'm up. What on earth is wrong with you." I mumbled.
"You. You are what is wrong with me. I've been trying to wake you up for half an hour now. Get your lazy ass out of the bed. You missed the bus so I have to drop you now." A vein popped out on her forehead.
"FINE. Just get the hell..." I stopped when I saw her dilated pupils."Out." I muttered in a low voice.
How can I say that to her. I was probably in those rebellious years when hormones are kicking in and you find your parents annoying.
I put one leg out of the blanket. Then the other and then slowly I got my whole body out of the blanket. The same I do when I take a shower with cold water. Winters make you so lazy. But it was a very cold day. Not cold in a conventional way but like satin cold. I attempted to peer out of the window but the cold had created a fog making this difficult. The continuous shivering did not help me much either. I skipped shower and threw on my favourite sweater and black tights to cover my shivering legs and wore my uggs.
Not having enough time to tame my messy hair, I capped them.
The aroma of coffee blessing my nostrils. My mornings basically begin after coffee.I stepped outside in the frigid air and felt the cold seep into my body chilling my bones. I exhaled and watched my breath turn the morning air white.
The journey was quiet with my mom continuously scowling.
" I'm sorry mom. I love you." I mentioned and kissed her forehead before getting out of the car as she stopped in front of my school.
My school was a U shaped building situated in the middle. The words "Mayfair Rosemary High School" boldly written on top of it. There was a path leading to the main entrance. The playground was on the left of the path and a big garden on the right.
It was the second best high school in the town. Pine Crest was the crown bearer of being number one and was our biggest rival. These two schools were like two separate territories.
Just as I entered in hallway, the bell rang marking the end of my chemistry class.
I let out a sigh of relief. I hated chemistry. Soon people entered the hallway from all the sides and there was a sea of faces before me. I felt lost like a rat in a maze. I searched for a known face in the crowd but there was none.
"HAZEL!" A voice came from somewhere.
"Linda?" I shouted. I saw her approaching me.
Beside her was Mason Arlo. My other best friend. We were like the famous three musketeers. Before he moved away to Seattle. And the video calls turned to voice calls. Voice calls replaced by text messages and then we no longer talked. Not even on birthdays.
"Hey Mason. Long time no see."
I wrapped my arms around him. I could feel the world around me melting away as he squeezed me back. If only I could stay in his arms and never let him go. But one could only hope.
"But we did meet yesterday." He whispered.
"Hey. Am I like invisible here?" Linda complained.
"I'm glad you're not." I chuckled and threw one arm around her. Finally, I was home.
"Make way for the anorexic girl." Some one announced.
"Does mom not feed you well?" Another voice.
"Left your ass at home. Can't see you carrying any."
"Don't you need a license to be this ugly?"
Different statements but all pointed at the same girl making her way through the crowd. Rachel Melody. My second deed. She was strikingly thin. So thin that you could see the outline of her skeleton. It seemed like she would break if the wind blew harshly, that is if the words did not break her. And she walked with the biggest frown on her face. Her eyes always red and puffed up. Half of her face covered by a hoodie. When someone's bullied, It is evident from the way they walk, from the words they utter. In short, she was a heartbreaking sight.
She was the girl bullied to death. The winter of 2012 was darkened by that one cloud in my childhood's bright sky. I sighed.
How can someone be so ready to embrace death that they take their own life?
I knew what she was going through. And I did nothing to save her. We all killed her. Her death left me in a sea of guilt.
I needed to save her.Author's Note:
