Chapter Five
Closer
Blue
Blue was finally released from the hospital and it felt good. They kept her for a week and a half. They wanted to make sure no infection set in. Matt stayed with her every night and her Mom came during the day. She sat and knitted and they talked like they haven't talked in years.
She was in the wheel chair now being wheeled out by Matt. Her one constant in this whole mess of a case. He put her first when he still had nightmares he had to deal with. Jill was still missing and they were running out of time. The family, Matt's brother and his wife, was going to hold another candle light ceremony but Matt was relentless that Blue stay home and rest. She was only listening to him so she could make it to the station tomorrow.
He gently helped her into the car and drove away. Sharon, her mom, stayed at the house and they would see her there. This would probably be the last time in a while that Blue and Matt would be alone outside of work.
"Thank you so much for everything you have done for me this week. Really, you went above and beyond the call of duty for a partner." Blue started to feel emotional so she stopped there.
"Blue," Matt looked at her for a fraction of a second then turned back toward the road, "I haven't been here for you because I am your temporary partner, I've been here because I care about you. You have become special to me and long after we get this monster and find Jill, alive and well, I will still be here, caring for you."
Blue looked flushed but was jumping up and down on the inside. He made her feel so wanted. She'd be lying if she said she hasn't had a few fantasies about Matt and herself. But Blue saw station romances before and for whatever reasons, they never worked out. Could something with Matt be different? Was that the kind of caring that he meant? Blue drifted off into a daydream about her and Matt when she noticed that they had pulled into her garage.
Her mom was standing at the door as they pulled in, her face looking happy and worried both at the same time. Blue stepped out of the car and went to hug her mother. The hug from her mother was a little longer than normal but that was okay. Their relationship was bettered by the explosion, they became closer, something that Blue never thought would happen.
"Thanks Mom for being here." Blue said. She could smell dinner in the house which was good because she was famished.
Matt carried his and her bags from the car while Sharon walked Blue into the home. Matt hadn't been here for a few days since he kept a bag at the hospital. The house seemed cozier and with dinner on the stove, it smelt like home.
Matt took Blue's bag into her room and went to set his on the floor in the hall closet. "No sir, put your bag in the middle room. That's where you'll be sleeping from now on." Sharon told him.
Matt didn't know what was happening but he obeyed Sharon, especially when she used that tone in her voice. He opened the door up and inside was a new bedroom set, a full size bed sat in the middle of the room. The bedding was masculine, purposely selected for a man.
"Sharon, you didn't need to get anything for me. I was perfectly fine on the couch." Matt begin but before he could finish, Blue cut in.
"Mom! What did you do?" Blue looked concerned.
"Oh, I just picked up a few things at the store, it's nothing really." Sharon tried to play it off.
Blue got up and walked down the hall. In the middle bedroom she saw the new bedroom set, it was something Blue would have picked, which meant it went against what her mother liked, so that was saying something.
