SCENE ONE

English class. Class is in progress, students sit facing teacher with LEIGH and EILLEEN in the back row, whispering to themselves.

MISS AMELIA:

Alright class, open your Macbeth books, please!

LEIGH:

(whispering) Why is she calling it Macbeth?

EILLEEN:

(shrugs)  I dunno. Everyone knows we're reading Hamlet.

LEIGH:

(Holds up book, with title MACBETH clearing facing the audience)  Ha-ha. Even the publishers got it wrong. I wonder how the author felt when they wrote "Macbeth" instead of "Hamlet".

EILLEEN:

(Nodding)  Pretty bad I reckon. Maybe that's why-

(Unknown to LEIGH or EILLEEN their voices have risen loud enough for the whole class to hear)

MISS AMELIA:

Leigh! Eilleen! Are you discussing the play?

(LEIGH and EILLEEN look at each other)

LEIGH/ EILLEEN:

Yes!

MISS AMELIA:

Then could you lower your voices? Not everyone in the class is as eager as you two to discuss the Bard's great work.

(MISS Amelia sits down at her desk)

(Two students in the front row have been glancing back at LEIGH and EILLEEN the entire time, exchanging glances. Now they sit whispering to each other, while LEIGH and EILLEEN continue their conversation, which is unheard by the audience)

KRISTEN:

(Whispering, annoyed) I hate it when they talk and barely get in trouble.

AVERIL:

I know right. (Glances down back of room) And I don't like them. Either of them.

KRISTEN:

That Eilleen is too smart for her own good. I wish I had a brain like hers.

AVERIL:

(Disgusted and angry) And be teacher's pet? Oh please.

(Kristen falls silent. Every now and then she glances up at Averil)

KRISTEN:

If it bothers you so much, why don't you do something about it?

AVERIL:

(Thinking, pauses before speaking) I will. We will.
