Agnes's father, or as she refers to him, David, was married to Katherine 2 months after Agnes turned 10, David and Katherine split up. Katherine seemed to have gone into some sort of shock that her husband had left her. Even though Katherine never told Agnes why her father had left her mother, eventually Agnes found out after a few visits to her father's house to find a woman looking maybe 2-3 years younger than her mother. Agnes connected the dots and came to the conclusion that this woman, Jane, was dating her father.
Agnes wasn't annoyed at her father for finding love again, but Katherine was. David tried to be involved in Agnes's life as much as he could. David went over to Agnes's home/Katherine's home to visit every month, and Agnes visited Jane and her father every 3 weeks. Over the period of time when Agnes's mother wasn't taking any notice of her daughter (this period is still going) Agnes clung to the only other mother figure in her life. In this case it was Jane. Jane took a shine to Agnes and Agnes seemed to look to Jane as a mother.
Both of the two were intelligent, independent women, and both loved David very much. When David told Katherine that he didn't love her anymore, she went into a state of shock, as I stated before. Whilst in this state of shock, Katherine forgot that she had a daughter, and stopped looking after her (mind you, this is when Agnes was only 10 years old) and forced Agnes to look after herself.
Her father didn't really notice that Katherine stopped tending to her daughter and so there was no steady mother figure apart from Jane and Jane really seemed to like David's daughter, and Agnes loved Jane, Jane seeming to become a second mother to Agnes.
