Anne was going on a date.

This wasn't actually rare, as she had been dating a man called Robin for quite a few months. Gemma didn't really mind; she knew her mother deserved the happiness he brought and she and her little brother Harry got along with him quite well. Harry even took very well to Robin, finding him quite funny and even allowing him to tuck him into bed a few times. Gemma knew he was winning him over.

So no, it wasn't uncommon for Anne to go on dates. It was on uncommon however, for her to go on dates all night long. This would be the first time she'd be left alone with Harry all night long, and even though she was 15, Harry could be quite the handful sometimes.

That's why Lottie was coming over.

Lottie had been Gemma's best friend for as long as she could remember, so of course Anne had said yes when Gemma asked if her blonde bestie could help babysit for the night. Harry would be pretty excited too, as he adored Lottie and Gemma figured he'd probably catch a little crush on her at one time or another.

The night was going to go quite well, Gemma decided. That is, after the goodbyes were done.

"Harry, come say bye to mummy!" Gemma heard Anne call as she walked down the stairs of their house. She heard the thumping steps of her younger brother until they stopped and she walked in on Harry crashing into their mother.

See, Harry could be quite clingy. Sometimes, if he wasn't feeling well or if he was really tired, he'd get pretty sniffly and clingy. However, he wasn't overly clingy and usually didn't cry when Anne left to go somewhere.

That's why Gemma was worried when she saw the tear tracks on her brothers chubby cheeks.

"Hey, mummy'll be back before you know it! You're gonna have loads of fun with Gem and Lotts here; you won't even notice I'm gone!" Anne tried to cheer Harry up, but it really wasn't working.

He continued to sniffle and hiccup as Anne bounced him on her hip, shushing him and giving him little pecks to reassure him.

Gemma heard a car pull up a few minutes later and knew that Robin had arrived. Before there was a knock at the door though, she opened it and allowed the man to walk inside.

"Harry's just a little upset," she notified, and Robins features were taken over with understanding.

"Hey, little man," he greeted, and Harry turned towards him. "I promise it's gonna be alright and I'm gonna take good care of your mummy. You won't even know she's gone!" Robin coo'd, and Gemma was thankful Anne had chosen someone so good with kids.

"I think it's time for mummy to go now," Anne murmured, and Gemma heard Harry quietly whine. "Give me a kissy and then we have to go," she said, and Harry pecked his mother on the lips.

Handing the small boy to Gemma, Anne said, "I'll be back as soon as you know it. I love you two!"

"Love you too!" Gemma called as the door closed, and then it was just the two of them.

"Lottie will be here soon," Gemma told her still sulking brother. She noticed him perk up at that and she chuckled.

"Should we get started on dinner while we wait for her?" she asked, and Harry nodded, always happy to be in the kitchen.
