September 7th, 1982 Hawkins High School Gymnasium

Sophomore, Jackie Byers panted heavily as she ran her final lap around the basketball court with her all girls PE class, the all boys class in the middle of the gym playing basketball as the two PE teachers talked instead of actually teaching the classes they were being paid to teach.

Finally finishing the final lap she smiled at her friends, Nancy Wheeler and Barbara Holland, "That was torture, guys."

"Jackie..." Barb started as she placed a hand on her friends sweaty shoulder, before removing it realizing how sweaty it was, "-It was only two laps."

The brunette sucked in a breath, "Still... I am not made to run laps guys... More like sitting on the bleachers and stretch out my legs for a nice nap."

The girls let out a laugh at their dramatic best friend, realizing just how unlike she was compared to her brothers.

Jonathan was a quiet, brooding guy who took pictures and sat in the back of the class, while Will was more of the innocent cute type who everyone loved. Jackie was shy, but loud, and was funny and dramatic but usually kept to her friend group.

The girls continued to talk as Junior, Steve Harrington kept stealing glances at the scrawny, pale girl he had never seen before: she had dark brown hair that made her pale white skin look even paler, her bright cheeks a deep red from running, and her brown eyes traveled around her friends and the group of boys, their eyes never catching like he hoped they would.

"Steve? Hey, dumbass?" Tommy H. asked, with Carol staring at him from his arm, "Why aren't you playing man? You just lost us like six points-"

Tommy and Carol followed his gaze right towards the girl and let out cowardly laughs, "Really, Steve? Byers hot sister?"

Steve whipped his gaze to Tommy and Carol, "What? What about Byers?" Tommy rolled his eyes with a smirk, "You dumb shit, that's his twin sister, Jackie."

The teen looked back at her, not noticing anything about her and Jonathan that were similar, until he really looked at her eyes, noticing the sad brown eyes they shared. "Why don't we get this train rolling?" Tommy said, holding the basketball in hands and pulling it back as if he was going to throw it at her.

"What, Tommy no!" Steve screamed, grabbing the ball and started playing a serious game of tug-of-war with Tommy H. The two fought back and forth before Tommy smirked and let the ball go, as Steve's hand flew back and the ball launched behind his body and right towards Jackie.

A sudden thud was heard, then a gasp, followed by a holler of "What the hell, Harrington?"

Tommy H. and Carol swayed away quietly, leaving Steve all alone on the basketball court, all eyes on him as Mickey, and her short height, stormed towards him with dreaded anger in her eyes. She reached up and gripped onto his collar, pulling his face down close to hers, "Harrington."

"J-Jackie..." He answered with a bead of sweat rolling down his freckles face, "Nice weather were having-

"Cut the shit-" She said, adjusting her grip so it was looser, but she still had a grip on his gym shirt.

"Look, you're making me be very confident in front of a lot of people.. Look- look at me-" She said as he looked away from her and the ever growing crowd around them, "... You're a real dick for doing that."

She said, before pulling away letting go of his shirt and taking a step back, "Why'd you hit me with the ball?"

Steve shook his head, "It was a total accident I swear." Jackie nodded with a purse of her lips, not believing him for one minute, her palms planted on her hips.

She looked him up and down, before slowly turning back towards Nancy and Barb. Steve gulped before holding onto her wrist, "Okay, how about I take you out? For dinner?"

She cocked an eyebrow as she turned around, as he rubbed the wrinkles out of his collar, "You- wanna take me out, as an apology?"

"Yeah, for hitting you and making you... feel confident?" He asked, as more on a question.

She looked around at the crowd, waiting for her answer and she said, "I hate Mexican food, pick me up by 7:30." The crowd 'ooed' in response as she walked away, Barb squealing, as Nancy faked a smile.

Steve, still rubbing his shirt looked at the girl in curiosity, 'Who hated Mexican food?'
