love is a chemical reaction.
I can’t make references to God
or some sort of heaven I found when I met you.
love is a chemical reaction.
I can’t talk about fate or a uniting of souls,
you know that.
love is a chemical reaction
Yes, a reaction of the brain,
and I am a person of science.
A long practicing Atheist
with a textbook as my bible.
I do not believe in soulmates, or some
spiritual desire to hold someone’s body
against my own.
love is a chemical reaction.
Biology class was my church
and,
like a prayer,
I repeated the words over and over again:
love is a chemical reaction.
but something in the way
my feet feel lighter on the pavement
when i’m walking next to you;
how your arm brushing against mine
sends electricity through my bones
(Even though I know it can’t be scientifically possible.)
Something in all of that makes me
second guess myself
in my denial of something outside
or protons, neutrons, electrons-
because maybe,
just maybe,
you’re proof enough.
