After the black haired boy ran off You pull away. "Uhhhh" "I'm sorry!" Stan holds his hands up in surrender "I'm really sorry. It's just.... I've really liked you for a long time, even though I didn't really know you that much..." you motion him off, "it's ok, it really is, but... I think I have feelings for... someone else." You smile softly. "I'm really, really sorry..." Stan gives a small smile, "I figured as much, Richie can be annoying but he is pretty funny sometimes too." "How-" "I'm pretty good at reading emotions, less at expressing them." Stan cuts me off, "now come on, let's get back before anyone notices!" Too late for that you think, but instead turn to Stan and give him a hug. "Alright let's go." Coming back to the water you see everyone getting out of the water and toweling off. You walk over and grab your towel, then sneakily sidle over to Richie. You are sure it's him who saw you and Stan kiss, but you wouldn't want him getting the wrong idea and spreading rumours. "Hey Richie, can we talk?" You whisper, but it's like you're not even there, because Richie just folds up his towel roughly and plops it on the ground by a group of rocks. You lay yours down beside his, but he promptly picks up his stuff and goes to sit by Ben. You feel rejection and hurt. Going to lie beside Bev to suntan you try and relax, but your mind is to hectic. Bev nudges you after a few minutes. "You know they're staring right?" "Uh, no, but on 3 flip over." "1, 2, 3!" We both flip and look at the boys. They all instantly look away.Richie opens up Bens backpack and begins rummaging around. He finds a whole bunch of newspaper clippings and pieces of paper stuffed inside. "News flash, Ben, school's out for the summer." "Oh that, that's not school stuff." Ben replies, and you scooch closer, intrigued. Richie pulls out a smaller piece of paper that looks like a postcard. "Who sent you this?" Ben quickly snatches in back and stuffs it in his bag, "No one." "What's with the history project?" Richie inquires, "Oh well, when I first moved here, I really didn't have anyone to hang out with so I just started spending time in the library." Ben sounds like he's very intrigued by this, but you feel bad he had nobody to hang out with. "You went to the library? On purpose?" Richie asks incredulously
I wanna see." Says Bev, sitting down beside Ben and reaching out her hand. "What's the Black Spot?" She asks
"The Black Spot was a nightclub that was burned down years ago by that racist cult." Answers Ben. "Y-y-y-your hair..." Bill stutters. "Your hair looks beautiful. Beverly." Ben says sweetly, "oh, hey thanks." Bev replies awkwardly. "Here, pass." You ask. "Why's it all murders and missing kids?" Ben takes a deep breath, "Derry's not like any town I've ever been in before. They did a study once..." he pauses, then decides to continue, "it turns out people die or disappear six times the national average." "You read that?" Eddie asks. "Not just grown-ups. Kids are like worse...way, way worse." "I've got more stuff, if you want to see it?" You instantly agree, curious about this boy. You all quickly pedal over to Bens house and Ben sprints inside ahead of you guys. You try, unsuccessfully, to talk to Richie again, but he seems to have shunned you. We walk inside Bens room. "Woah, woah, woah, wow!" Richie mocks excitement. "Cool, huh?" Ben asks Richie proudly. Richie is unimpressed. "No, nothing cool. There's nothing cool." "Well this is cool, wait, no it's not." "What's that?"
You point to another newspaper clipping on the wall. "That? That's the charter for Derry Township." "Nerd alert." Richie replies. "Actually, it's really interesting." Ben is unfazed by Richie. "Derry started as a beaver trapping camp-" "Still is, am I right, boys?" Richie holds up a hand to high-five, and trying your hardest to socialize with Richie you go to high-five him back. He moves his hand down and looks away. "Ninety-one people signed the charter that made Derry. But later that winter, they all disappeared without a trace." Ben explains to us "The entire camp?" Asks Eddie. "There were rumors of Indians...but no sign of an attack.Everyone thought it was a plague or something. But it's like..." Ben contemplates, "one day everybody just woke up and left. The only clue was a trail of clothes leading to the well-house." "Jesus, we can go on Unsolved Mysteries". Eddie points out.
Where was the w-w-well house? Bill asks, curiously. "I don't know, somewhere in town, I guess" Ben shrugs "Why?" "Nothing." You give Bill a suspicious look. You all file out of Bens home and grab your bikes one by one and begin to pedal down the street.
You and Richie go to grab your bikes, but they are all tangled together. Richie grows increasingly frustrated and starts ripping at his bike. "Woah, woah. Calm down there Richie!" You bend down to find the problem. "Are you mad at me or something?" You see Richie's pedal is entwined with yours and you slip it off. "No.." he grumps. You pretend you haven't quite fixed it to get in one more question. "So then... what's wrong?" "Nothing!" He pulls his bike up. "Tell me, please!" You beg, grabbing his shoulder, and he rips away. "You should know!" He practically sneers, "Stan too!" And with that he rides off. Leaving you baffled. You hop on your bike and pedal as fast as possible, just able to catch up to him. "Richie! Wait! I can explain!" His hair whips in the wind and he swerves in front of you, forcing you to stop in your tracks, giving him a head-start. Watching him pedal off, you know until you fix this, it won't matter how many times you catch up, he'll just keep cutting you off. Thanks so much to however is reading this, and a lot of thanks to my friend greeneyedbookbandit
