"It's like a family fucking reunion!" Lucas gripped me into a tight hug and Jonathan joined so they sandwiched me right on their large, furry room rug. Ava was on Jon's bed, leaning against his black emoticon-patterned backrest pillow. Nash sat next to her, typing away on his laptop as he tried to stay in the conversation and finish up his homework at the same time.
"Yeah and I'm sorry about everything you're dealing with," Jon sighed before they let me go. I picked at the rug quietly.
"No, I'm okay."
"Are you sure?" they asked simultaneously.
"Your boyfriend's not gonna cheat while you're away, right?" Nash asked me. Ava smacked his chest hard and he sent her a confused look. "What? That was a legitimate question."
"You haven't met David. He'd never do something like that. He's not you." She shook her head.
"Geez, sorry I asked," he mumbled, focusing back on his screen. "And I'm not a cheater, so if anything, he's not like Trey."
I scratched my head with furrowed eyebrows as Ava pointed a finger at me.
"No. Don't you dare. You know David would never, so don't even consider it."
"Rowan was his first love," I pointed out. "Hell, I can't even imagine being with someone other than David. Look, maybe we should just... talk about something else."
"Please, our lives aren't nearly as interesting enough to talk about," Jon scoffed. "Not that what's happening to you is interesting, I just... Crap, that all sounded much better in my head."
"Everything sounds better in your head, honeybug." Lucas reached over to lace his fingers with Jon, who crawled right over to him.
"I'm still working on my communication skills, you know this."
"I know." Lucas cradled him closely. "Shh."
I groaned, falling over onto a pillow. I already missed David and it had only been two hours since I left home. I was pathetic. It felt different than when I went to school for hours because I always knew I'd see him at the end of each day. God, what possessed me to think I could do this? I needed it though; I needed to miss him. I needed to step away and he needed space to think all of this through.
"How's your new roommate?" I asked Nash.
"Oh, Tristan? He's good I guess. I don't know, he likes to do his own thing. I just know that he has an unhealthy obsession with rabbits and hamsters. He's weird, whatever."
I laughed at him and Nash rolled his eyes playfully.
"You still with Trey?" I wondered. He and I didn't really discuss his love life considering I was once a part of it. Or, almost a part of it. Ava told me that he still had feelings for me and I guess I just felt guilty about the entire thing. The miscommunication between us when we were roommates was incredible.
But it led me to David. In the end, I wouldn't have changed a thing.
"W--yeah. Sorta." He wouldn't meet my eyes so I tilted my head in concern.
"Spit it out."
"There's nothing to 'spit out.'"
Obviously, something was really wrong. He had his walls up, just like the first time we met. So I decided to communicate my thoughts since I failed to do that with him last year. I felt he might appreciate it. "I just feel like if he's making you this unhappy then it's high time you separate yourself from him. I know how Trey acts; he's really mean and disrespectful."
"Cas," Nash looked at me finally, a tired expression on his face as he sighed. "You don't get an opinion on this, I'm sorry."
I exchanged silent glances with Ava and she shrugged.
