I woke up to the sound of my phone ringing. I lifted my hand as David stirred in his sleep beside me. Sighing groggily, I picked up my phone and checked the caller ID, but it was an unknown number.
I frowned, getting off the bed and stepping out of the room before answering. "Hello?" I tried to rub the sleepiness out of my eyes.
"Am I speaking to Casper Niely?" a baritone voice inquired, one that I vaguely recognized.
"Y-yes, who's-"
"You'll be eager to hang up but I urge you not to. I assure you'll want to hear what I have to say."
"Who are you?" I moved away from the room door, slowly heading downstairs and turning on a dim light.
"Eric Larsen. We've met."
David's father? Why would he be calling me at 9 in the morning? And how did he get my phone number?
" What do you want? Why are you calling me?"
"Because of the promise I made to you."
"I don't... I don't understand; what promise? The only time we spoke was at the hospital."
"Exactly. Do you remember our conversation or do you need a reminder?"
"I can recall what you said. Something along the lines of you making sure I never lay eyes on your son again, and a couple threats here and there. Sorry if I missed some details, it was mostly just bullshit anyway."
"Hm. You must be feeling comfortable and confident in your relationship with my son."
"Very," I affirmed. "There's not a single thing you can do to change that."
He chuckled dryly. "I want to talk to you. In person. Soon."
I squinted, furrowing my eyebrows. "What? Why?"
"You'll find out when we meet."
"No. No, I want nothing to do with you."
"See, Casper," he sighed. "You don't really have a choice in the matter."
"Really? So you're gonna come drag me away or what?"
"You'll come at your own will, I'm sure. I won't be dragging you anywhere. Here, why don't I give you some motivation, hm?" He paused for just a second. "I know who your friends are. I know where they live."
"That's a lie and we both know it." I tightened my grip on the phone.
"Really, so Lucas Montana is just a stranger to you? What about Jonathan, or um... Ava, is it?"
My eyes widened. "Don't you dare hurt my friends."
"Wasn't going to. Oh! Your family, how are they doing? When's the last time you spoke to Dawson?"
My skipped a beat as I scowled. He knew my family? "Are you stalking everyone I care about?"
"Please," he laughed. "I'm in Asia, where I've been for weeks. The view is quite amazing all the way up here. I could send a postcard if you'd like?" He taunted me. I closed my eyes, placing my hand on my forehead in frustration.
"How the hell do you know them?"
"I could answer that but... I'd rather just speak to you in person. So how about it?"
I opened my eyes. "Will you leave them alone if I see you?"
"Guaranteed, your family and friends will all be safe and secure."
"Then where? And when?"
I walked into the lounge to get some paper and a pen, feeling myself close to tears.
