Chapter 2: An Unpleasant Surprise

Spencer's POV:

I can't believe who is standing right in front of me.

It's Mrs. Dilaurentis, and she's staring right at me with a look of pure hatred.  Toby senses my uneasiness and squeezes my hand.  This brings me back to reality.  With hesitation, I slowly walk up to the mother of my "dead" best friend.  She thinks I killed her daughter, but what she doesn't know, is that Ali is really alive and in hiding.

"Hello Spencer, I heard you were Valedictorian this year and I just couldn't pass up the opportunity to see you give your speech!" she says with a fake smile that says "I hate your guts".  

I honestly don't know why she's here.  Maybe she's hoping I'll mess up and she'll get to see it.

"Hi Mrs. D. Thank you for coming!" I say with the most enthusiastic expression I could give under the circumstances.

I look at Toby, signaling him that it's time to get out of here.  I thank say goodbye to Mrs. D. and head to the girl's locker room with my mom to dress into my cap and gown, leaving my dad to talk to Mrs. D. alone.  He seems to be having a very heated argument with her, but I don't know what it's about.  I don't think much of it, but maybe I should've.

*GRADUATION CEREMONY*

Toby's POV:

I take my seat and watch as Spencer and her friends get called up to the stage to recieve their diplomas: Emily, then Spencer, then Hanna, and lastly, Aria.  I can see Spencer begin to sweat as the principal calls Spencer to the podium.

"Congratulations Rosewood High graduates.  And now without further ado, please welcome our Valedictorian, Spencer Hastings!"

I can see she is now freaking out inside as she makes her way to the podium while the whole room booms with applause.  I just hope she won't lose it on stage in the middle of her speech in front of thousands of people.  She glances over at me with a nervous look on her face and I respond with an encouraging smile, which seemed to calm her down a little bit.

She starts off her speech with "Friends, family, and fellow students, thank you all for coming out tonight to celebrate such a special event in the lives the Rosewood High senior class..."

After about 15 minutes, she finished with "...and I have no doubt in my mind that the future holds something great for each and every one of you.  Thank you and congratulations Rosewood High seniors!"  Everyone in the room stood up and applauded as Spencer walked back to her seat.  I glanced 2 seats down from me and saw Wren clapping with somewhat of a smirk on his face.  God I hate that guy.  He's always hitting on MY Spencer, and I don't like it one bit.

And I decided I'm going to confront him, at the graduation party.
