"So you're meeting Kol for lunch for what, the third time this week?" Rebekah called, startling you.
"Yes," you said, refusing to meet her eyes, "he's a good friend."
"A good friend!" She cackled, rising to wrap her arm around you and wave at her brother across the room.
"Klaus! Did you know Kol and y/n are good friends?"
"Oh, is that all?" Klaus' eyes glinted. "Don't let him hear you're saying that, he'll be disappointed."
"Leave me alone," you told them, ignoring their laughter as you jogged to your car.
You met Kol at half past noon, letting him kiss you on the cheek and wrap an arm around you while you walked into the restaurant.
"So how are you, love?"
"I'm great, but I'd be a lot better if your siblings would leave me alone."
"You and me both," he chuckled. You laughed and reached across the table to squeeze his hand, not noticing his blush.
You had a nice little lunch, sharing funny anecdotes from the past few days, but you couldn't help but notice that Kol had been a bit less available when he spoke about himself, more hesitant to dive into his thoughts and feelings as usual.
You didn't see him for a few days, and in fact didn't go back to the Mikaelson mansion until Rebekah invited you for dinner.
As soon as you walked in the front door, Elijah gave you a smile and cupped his hands, directing his yell of "Y/n's here!" towards the stairway you knew led to Kol's room.
"I'm here to see Rebekah," you told him.
"Is that so?" He looked genuinely surprised. "Well, Kol will be disappointed to hear that.
"Kol will be disappointed to hear what?" Your friend asked, descending partway down the stairs and winking at you.
"Why, that your lovely lady friend is in fact not here for you at all," Klaus told him, speeding over to wrap an arm around your shoulders.
"I'm actually busy right now," Rebekah called from somewhere in the house, "so go be with Kol, won't you, y/n?"
Before you even got a chance to reply one of the Mikaelson brothers had shoved you halfway up Kol's staircase so that you nearly collided with him. He laughed and apologized, looking at you with a tenderness you couldn't quite reconcile with the best friend you regarded him as.
He hooked his arm in your elbow and walked you upstairs, stopping at the entrance to his bedroom.
"I'm sorry about them," he told you, running his hands through his hair.
"It's fine," you said, but he still seemed on edge, and as you opened your mouth to ask what was wrong he cut you off.
"They're not wrong, though."
"What?"
"I am in love with you," he stated, as plainly as if you'd asked about the time.
"Oh," you said, eyes lingering on his lips.
"And unless you have an objection, I'm going to kiss you now."
"Feel free."
"Wait, really?"
