not my art

After a moment of quiet embrace, Damien invited me into his office. As he led me inside, Mari gave me a look of distrust, jealousy, and hatred. I quickly looked away, feeling a shiver go up my spine. Damien closed the door and smiled. "You don't know how good it is to see your face again." he said wistfully. I grinned. "Same goes to you, mister mayor."

He laughed. "Oh come on now! Don't start solely seeing me as the mayor, alright? I have my new responsibilities yes, but I'm still your best friend nonetheless." he said, sitting down at his desk. I blushed lightly as I pulled up a chair to sit opposite of him.

"Now, why did you come to see me? You seemed shocked to find it was me, so I assume there's something you needed the mayor for."
I chuckled. "While that contradicts your previous statement," I paused and smiled as he let out a laugh, "yes, I do need the mayor. Celine sent me to find a job, though it seems she knew I'd find you."

"Yes, I'm sure she did. She knew how much I missed you. Haven't seen her in ages though, how is she?"

"Good! Still as independent as ever."

"Ahh, of course. When did you come home?"

"Maybe a little over a week. It hasn't been long. It's relieving to see familiar faces. I was so worried that.."

"You wouldn't see anyone you once you came back?"

I nodded. He grinned and opened his arms. "Well you found me didn't you?" I giggled. "Indeed I did."

There was a pause. Damien cleared his throat and leaned back, his chair giving a small 'creak' as he did so. "Now, about that job. I assume Celine meant filing papers and such, correct?" he asked. "I believe so, she didn't tell me much other than there was an open job here." I replied sheepishly. He nodded, then paused to think for but a moment. "Well, while it is against my better judgement to accept a job offer without papers of some kind, I would love to have an opportunity to work with you. And in any case, I do trust you! I knew you for years! I think I can bend the rules a bit to allow you to get the job."

I grinned. "Great!! When can I start?" I bubbled. "Tomorrow, if you'd like!" he replied. "Thank you so so much Damien." I said. I stood up and turned to go. Suddenly he grabbed my wrist. "Wait!" I turned back around to see he had stood as well, leaning over the desk, his hand firmly grabbing my arm. He quickly let go and gave me a shy smile. "You don't have to go! Sit down, we can talk. I want to know what you've been up to for these last five years." he said, gesturing to my seat. "Are.. are you sure? As much as I'd love to stay, I'm sure you have things to do." I replied. He sat back down, leaning back and intertwining his fingers as he had before. "I'll ask Mari to clear my afternoon. She probably won't like it, but there's not much I have to do anyway. Besides, there's five years worth of things to talk about, so why not get started now?"

I smiled and sat back down. "You really are too kind." I said, to which he chuckled, "That girl out there is Mari I'm guessing?" He nodded.

"She's my secretary and my girlfriend." he replied. 'Oh.'

"Aww that's lovely."

"What about you? Any love interests as of late?"

I giggled. "Not recently. I've been too focused on my studies."

"Remember when you were head over heels for Mark? Second year, I believe was when your little fascination with him started."

I felt my face go crimson. "Oh good God Damien don't talk about that."

He chuckled. "How could I not? The Colonel and I wouldn't stop teasing you for it. What did you find attractive about an egomaniac?"

I laughed. "He was kind to me! And I do remember the two of you being asses."

"Only to you." He winked, to which my laughter increased. "But of course."

I suddenly jumped a bit in my seat as the door violently flew open. Mari walked up to my chair, her eyes still cold and distrusting.

"Excuse me Miss Whoever-You-Are, the mayor has a meeting to attend so I think it's high time you leave, immediately." she sneered bluntly. She clearly no longer wanted me around. Damien raised his hand to stop her. "Mari it's alright. Actually, could you clear my afternoon? I'd like to spend some time with Miss Iris here. She's a good friend of mine and I haven't seen her in years."

Mari looked exasperated. "But.." Damien stood and walked over to her, pecking her on the cheek. "I can reschedule what I need to tomorrow." he said gently. She sighed. "Fine." He grinned. "Thank you so much love."

She left the room and he carefully closed the door behind her. He turned back to me with a smile, though it suddenly disappeared. "Are you alright?" he asked worriedly. It was then I realized my expression had become a small scowl. I quickly blinked and dropped the look, my cheeks once again going pink. "Sorry, just.. Thinking." I murmured, waving him off as though it was nothing. But he seemed to catch my bluff and chuckled. "Whatever you say Invidia."

I raised an eyebrow. "Invidia?" I asked. "Well well, seems you didn't pay attention in our Latin class. Invidia is the Latin word for envy." he replied with a wink. I felt my face and neck flush. "I don't.. I'm not.." I paused, cleared my throat, then raised my posture and crossed my arms, "I don't know what you are talking about sir." He laughed and shook his head. "Well in any case," he sat back down behind the mahogany desk, "where were we? There is definitely a lot we have to talk about."

~*~*~

We spent hours talking about anything and everything. Our conversations were endless. Damien spoke of being elected mayor and his association with Mari. I explained why I had stayed at University and went over my week back in the city. We asked each other questions, joked and laughed together, shared our hobbies and interests. I knew we had been apart for so long, but it felt as though we had never really lost touch.

Damien and I had always been particularly close out of our group. If either of us was in a slum or having troubles, we always went to each other first. At Uni we were hardly seen apart from each other. I had eventually developed feelings for him, but had fizzled out as our years away dragged on. Now, however, I felt a familiar flutter in my stomach. I knew I had to ignore it, but then again I couldn't deny it forever. (this line is cheesy ew i'm sorry)

~*~*~

When I finally did look at my watch, I realized how long we had talked. I knew Celine would want me home, so with a sigh, I gave my old friend a sad smile. "Though I believe we truly could talk forever, all good things must come to an end. I'm sure Celine will want me home." I said, standing up. He furrowed his eyebrows. "Is Celine staying with you?" he asked. I gave him a look of confusion. "Well, yes! It is her house, she lives there." He bit his tongue. "But I would think she.." he waved off his own thoughts, "nevermind, it doesn't matter."

With a grunt, his stood and stretched momentarily, then met my eyes again and smiled. "I enjoyed our talk, I'm very much looking forward to working with you. Just so you know, you have the option of taking Sundays off if you wish." he said boisterously. I grinned. "I'll accept that offer in a heartbeat." I replied. He chuckled. "Still as lazy as you were five years ago hmm?"

"Hey!" I exclaimed, giving him a playful shove. He laughed and pulled me into a final embrace. "See you tomorrow then?" I asked. "Of course." he smiled. I turned and opened the door to leave. "See you tomorrow Invidia." he said cheekily. I smirked and rolled my eyes. "Good bye Ludo."

"What?" he laughed. I turned back to him with a cheeky grin. "Ahh seems you didn't pay attention in Latin either! Ludo is the Latin word for flirt." I replied with a wink. As I turned and left, a smile crept onto my lips as I heard his laughter echoing down the hall.
