Charlie worked intently, hunched over his workbench. Rock music blared ferociously in the background.
"Dad!" Meg's voice sliced through the music. She strode into the room wearing her typical fishnet stockings, ripped jeans, and a shirt from a recent rock concert.
"Good you are here. I need you." He spoke distractedly, his fingers spread delicately across a microscopic silver conglomeration of metal and wires. Meg groaned with typical teenage aggravation and pointed her finger at the spot he had indicated. A tiny blue flame erupted from her finger. She gave him the perfunctory eye roll as the pieces were soldered together. He held the piece up under a microscope and scrutinized it. A triumphant smile spread across his lips. He held it up to her proudly.
"What is it?" She asked annoyed looking at her watch.
"It is the final piece to the puzzle." He said as he gently fit the item into a small black metal object not more prominent than his wallet.
"Dad, you need to let mom go its been twelve years." Meg groaned, completely fed up with her father's delusions.
"This goes beyond your mother, Meg." He said holding up the finished product to project simulator. A thin beam of light scanned it and turned green.
"Dad you are obsessed. The Elementalist was defeated the same day Mom died. Everyone knows that." She said crossing her arms.
"Wrong." He growled focusing back on his new prized piece of tech.
"Dad you were in shock. The doctor said so."
"That doctor was a pawn." He made a couple more small adjustments.
"Sarah." He called.
"Yes, Mr. Walker?" Came a familiar feminine voice.
"Do you have emergency procedures ready?" Charlie said ignoring his daughter.
"Always sir," answered the computer's voice.
"Excellent!" He exclaimed. "Ready? Test in five, four,"
"Dad!" Megan screeched. "We have an appointment."
"It can wait. Three, two, and one!" Thousands of small black objects started covering his body. They crawled over him like a scarab swarm.
"Dad!" Megan screamed panic in her voice.
He did not answer her. His body collapsed to the ground. Deathly still.
"Sarah! What the heck is going on?" Megan shrieked leaping across the room to her fathers' body. It encased him in a hard ebony shell. A small green light flashed in the center of where his forehead would be.
"Dad when you have finished with this 'test' I will personally kill you!" As the words left her mouth, a holographic message appeared in front of her. 'No need' was all it said.
"What do you mean? 'No need.'" She asked.
"Scanning for bio-signs." Sarah's voice called also ignoring Meg.
"You cannot be serious!" Megan balked incredulously.
"Bio-signs are reading stable. Engaging preservation nominalization." Sarah's voice droned on. "Shields engaged."
