He guesses by how her eyes can't meet his, and how her cheeks become a fluorescent pink if the former situation happens by accident, that she holds some form of affection for him that extends past the confines of a platonic care.

He guesses that, when one of her fingers brushes against him but are quickly, nervously, pulled away it is a careful invitation to hold hands; one she would never admit to, one in which she will always need him to make the first move upon.

He guesses, having watched her speak confident and fluently with her friends only to stammer as soon as his form approaches her little group, that these feelings for him that she imprisoned in a gentle heart are ones which render her nerves.
