Funny story: The other day I was helping my mom look through the basement and organize shit (which was boring as HELL), and I found a box full of old homework assignments from elementary school. One of them from 3rd grade I had to write a two paragraph essay, and I remembered complaining to my mom when I was little, "Why do I have to do this? It's not like I'm gonna be a writer when I'm older!" And now I'm on here. Writing for fun. I hate admitting when my parents and teachers are right.

Chapter 12

Aleksander's POV

What the fuck is she up to? Leksi had a slightly mischievous grin on her face as we left. Where we lived didn't have many woods, but there was one place a few miles away where people went camping in the summer. But no one would be there now since it was damn cold out.

She took the bike and I took the skateboard, like before, but this time she went much faster. "Leksi, slow the hell down!"

"No, you speed up!" she called over her shoulder.

I looked around to make sure no one was looking before going faster. Most of the lights were off and I figured a lot of people were sleeping. It was . . . really nice, I had to admit. The wind blowing in my face and passing houses and trees so fast felt awesome.

"That's better," Leksi said when I caught up to her. "I'd go faster, but I don't wanna break your bike."

"Hell with the bike; worry about breaking the street." She laughed.

We got to the trail about a half an hour later and I asked, "So are you going to tell me why you wanted to come here?"

"Be patient, dude."

I tried to get through her mental wall, but she just pushed me out.

"Patience is not one of my strong points."

"Me neither," she replied, getting off the bike and putting it behind a tree. She motioned for me to do the same with my skateboard, and I did. Suddenly, she said, "Race you to that big tree," and she ran.

"What the hell!" I shouted, running after her. The tree she was running to was about a mile away, and I could barely see it, even with my vision.

She just laughed and ran faster. It was surprisingly challenging catching up to her. In PE class or hanging out with my friends, I pretend to struggle so that no one would suspect anything. Now, I pushed my legs harder, my competitive nature kicking in. No way was I letting her win.

Unfortunately, she made it there about 5 seconds before me. "That wasn't... fair. You got... a head start," I said between panting breaths.

"Don't make... excuses. You just don't... wanna admit... that I'm faster... than you," she said, breathing just as hard.

I waited until our breathing was back to normal before asking, "Was that why you wanted to come here?"

"Yeah, because you said that you always try to act normal in front of your friends. You can't honestly tell me that you didn't enjoy that."

I did enjoy it. It sucked competing with someone, knowing you could easily beat them. In that way, Leksi and I were opposites. I've been suppressing my unusual abilities while she's been forced to use them. "Wanna race back?" I asked excitedly.

"Sure." We crouched next to each other, getting ready. "GO!"

As we both started running, I was sure she had been holding back before. It was strange actually having to push myself harder to keep up with her. I'd never tried to see how fast I could go or how strong I was. I only ignored it, hoping it would go away.
