Chapter 2
The television must have had a sleep function because, though Camry fell asleep with the news still relaying an overall lack of information, she woke up with the TV off and cold. She had managed to somehow maneuver herself completely under the covers, head and all. Which wasn't an unusual sleeping position for her. The hotter she was, the more comfortable.
When she poked her messy head of red hair out from underneath, she found herself facing the footboard as she had fallen asleep upside down. Before she even comprehended that, however, the cold morning air struck her in the face and she groaned, pulling her head back.
The generators were still rumbling, but that didn't change the fact that the entire house was surrounded by snow and the cold leaked in everywhere. When she put her feet down onto the wood floor, she had to jerk it back quickly because it was so cold that it had nearly burned.
Groaning, now wide awake thanks to the pain, she rubbed the ball of her foot before looking to the door where her slippers were hanging from the rack. Just out of reach.
She grabbed the blanket and threw it down onto the ground. Then she used it as a bridge to approach the rack and grab her slippers. She pulled them on, and replaced the blanket, before making her way to the bathroom to turn on the water so she could let it heat up. It was going to take a minute thanks to the freezing weather.
So, while the water was running, she left the bathroom, and moved back into the living room. Yawning, she turned on the coffee maker before grabbing some bread and throwing it in the toaster. She was already regretting that she had been interrupted in her reading and enjoying the silence of the mountain. Hopefully, she would get another chance that wasn't disturbed by sirens.
Camry wasn't sure exactly what time the sirens had been turned off. However, her loneliness here at the top of the mountain gave her the impression that it had never happened. There was no lingering apprehension or whispers from people wondering about the dragon. She rather thought that she preferred this silence.
Her toast popped up and she spread some jelly over the top as she moved back to the bathroom. When she finished her shower, her coffee would be finished. She settled for eating her toast by itself as she gathered her towels and clothing.
Since she didn't intend to wash her hair, Camry gathered it up into a messy bun before stripping off her clothing. Part of her was tempted to play music while she showered, but she wasn't planning on being inside for very long.
She hummed to herself as she pulled back the shower curtain and put her hand inside to check to make sure it had warmed up enough.
The hiss of freezing cold water on her hand hit her ears before the pain struck her brain.
Camry screamed, jerking her hand back and cradling it to her chest. She doubled over, rocking in place as she tried to fight back the urge to cry. She yanked her towel off of the counter and began quickly wiping away the water. The roughness of the cloth met the raw skin and she moaned in agony.
Trembling, she pulled her hand up to look at it, to check the damage.
Where the shower head had sprayed the near frozen water down against the appendage, her skin had become blotchy and red. The center of the burn was already beginning to blister and she groaned as she moved quickly into the front room where her supplies were.
Another habit her mother had instilled in her was to always be prepared. She had brought a first aid kit up with her. She pulled it out and sat on the couch as she quickly spread some burn cream across the damaged skin and wrapped it tight in gauze. She might be impervious to fire, but she always kept burn cream on hand.
