Chapter 15

Camry whipped her head around as she turned quickly, her body still crouched low to the floor. Part of her was scared to try and stand. Like an animal, cornered and trying to make herself seem as small as possible.

From where he had been standing behind the door, hiding and waiting for her to walk in, Parker Finely stepped forward. A smile on his face. A gun in his hand.

He kept the weapon pointed at her and a strange, cold numbness filled Camry at the daunting sight of the black hole at the end.

"Parker?" She gasped. "You... What are you doing with that?"

"Better question is, what were you doing with those dragons?" His eyes narrowed on her. "I've never heard of such a thing. A human riding a dragon."

Camry hesitated. She couldn't exactly tell him what was going on when she didn't know herself. And the sight of his gun, still trained on her, didn't prompt much thought on the subject.

When she didn't answer, Parker gave her a dark look. The friendly, outright meek expression he had always worn before was completely gone. She didn't even recognize the face he wore now as he came towards her, walking across the burned husk of the couch.

"I asked you a question." He lifted the gun, as though the draw her attention onto it.

Camry's eyes followed the movement cautiously. It was a regular pistol, not a cold gun, but that fact did nothing to ease her fear. He could shoot her before she ever drew in a breath to defend herself and a lead bullet would do just as much damage as a cold one.

"He was just... showing me something." She finally whispered, unsure of what else to say.

"Showing you something?" Parker repeated the words with a smirk in one corner of his mouth. "A beast was showing you something? That's the best you can do?"

Camry just blinked at him, unsure of what else she was supposed to say.

Parker didn't bother to question her on the topic further. He stopped a few feet away, staring at her down the barrel of his pistol. Camry just watched, waiting for him to do something. She was scared to try moving for fear of him shooting her.

"What are you?" His voice, low and tight, didn't sound particularly curious. He almost seemed grossly horrified.

When she didn't respond, he shook his head with a grin.

"Never mind. It doesn't matter. Does it?"

His hand tightened on the gun-

-a car door slammed outside, catching their attention.

Camry's breath trapped in her throat and, in the terror of thinking she had just almost been shot, she didn't register the sound for a minute. She just continued staring up at Parker, stunned thoughtless.

It wasn't until heavy boots started on the steps that she realized someone was out there.

"H-Help!" She yelled, voice cracking in her desperation.

Parker turned to her, sneering. Before he could make a move, whoever was on the other side turned the knob and gently pushed the door inward.

The sight of Harcourt's confused face made Camry cry out in relief. Tears filled her eyes as she realized that she was saved.

"Harcourt! Help!" She yelled for him.

Harcourt frowned, looking at Parker, to the gun, then to her and back again. "What do you think you're you doing?"
