By 8:25 the family was stepping out of the house, Lauren dressed in her police uniform while Ally was in her nurse scrubs.
Dinah ran around the driveway, making her cape fly behind her.
"Dinah Jane, not near the street!" Ally called out. Even if they lived in a quiet neighbourhood she didn't want her daughter on the road without herself or Lauren there to move her if a car came by.
"Alright girls, can you say goodbye to Ally?" Lauren asked, handing Normani over to her wife so she could say one last goodbye.
"Bye-bye, Ally. Thank you," Camila said, hugging the woman's leg before she returned to Lauren's side.
"No, thank you for being such a wonderful guest, Camila. It was really nice meeting you," Ally said, crouching down and opening her arm for a real hug, which Camila happily moved into.
She held the girls for a while, giving them one last squeeze before giving them up to Lauren.
"You'll make sure they're safe?"
"Of course, babe," Lauren said, giving her wife a kiss as she held a squirming Normani close to her chest.
"Alright. See you later, then. Come on, DJ. Time for nursery," the woman said, getting the two-year-old to run into her arms so she could get carried to her mama's car.
After one last wave, the two women pulled away from the driveway and headed in different directions.
Lauren played some of her soft music through the car, smiling every time she heard Normani gurgle before she made gnawing noises. She was probably chewing on her giraffe toy.
The drive to the station took twenty minutes, and by the time Lauren pulled her car into her parking spot rain had begun to fall in heavy drops.
"Let's get inside before we get drenched," Lauren said, getting out of the car and going around to pull Normani from her car seat while Camila unclipped herself and slipped out of the door that was already opened.
Once Lauren locked her car she rushed both girls inside, sighing in relief that it didn't start to downpour until after they stepped through the station's doors.
"Officer Jauregui, you're in early," Eliza at reception said, smiling kindly at the children. "Doesn't your next shift start at 2?"
"I got Lucy to ride with Justin and Selena later today. I'm just going to get these girls' living situation sorted out, do some paperwork, and then I'm going to head home before 5."
"Alright. I'll be sure to remind Justin and Selena about the change of plans so they don't leave without Lucy."
"Perfect. Thanks, Eliza. C'mon, Camila," Lauren said, leading Camila to the offices and lounging area of the station.
"You girls stay here and watch a movie, okay? I'm going to be right over there," Lauren explained, pointing to a table at the far end of the lounge area.
Camila nodded and got comfortable on the couch with Normani while Lauren set the TV up with one of five Disney movies they had at the station.
"I hope The Heffalump Movie is okay," Lauren said, hitting play on the DVD player before standing upright and looking to Camila who was already smiling at the opening image of the film. "I'll take that as a yes," Lauren laughed to herself leaving the two girls on the couch before heading over to the table.
She made a call to inquire about the girls' mother first, having a pretty solid idea that she didn't make it, but double-checking since it wouldn't be the first time someone survived a bullet to the head.
