One week later...
It was once their daughters started feeling better that Lauren and Ally had several things to get in order.
The most important of all matters was completing the social worker check-in as it was almost the end of January. The social worker of the girls, Jonathan, was set to arrive mid-day Tuesday, meaning both women had to be off work that day.
After that, they had to do a big grocery-shopping haul as they'd only been able to purchase smaller things over the course of the week that their girls were sick. They opted to do that on Tuesday as well after Jonathan completed his inspection.
On Thursday Camila and Dinah had another doctor's appointment to make sure whatever sickness they had didn't affect either of their breathing. Normani was being brought in for a quick weigh in as well.
Finally, they had to prepare for the family dinner with both their parents who were eager to meet their new "temporary" grandchildren. This was set for Friday.
With the chaotic week ahead, both Lauren and Ally devoted Sunday evening to lounging around the house with their girls. Dinah was antsy to get outside for a bit so they sat on the driveway, under the warm Miami sun, and played with chalk for a bit, a new activity for Camila.
"What's this?" Camila asked as she passed a light blue chalk piece between her hands. She was surprised to see the powder that remained on her little fingers.
"It's chalk, baby. You can draw on the ground with it," Ally explained, grabbing a pink piece and drawing out a simple flower for the girl to see.
Dinah was already busy scratching various pieces on the ground to make a rainbow.
"But it not paper," Camila said in confusion, having heard the women both mention to Dinah that she had to keep her colouring on the paper and not the table.
"This is different. Chalk is meant for pavement. It's okay. You can try," Ally reassured, moving on to draw a sun over her flower.
Camila squatted unsurely, placing her blue piece down before scratching it against the driveway. She smiled when she drew the line, going on to add more lines and squiggles to make her desired image.
She didn't usually like drawing. It was too overwhelming for her. But for some reason she liked playing with the chalk and watching it mark up the harsh gravel.
"Look, Mani, it's a kitten," Lauren said, drawing the baby on her lap some more animals.
Normani squealed with delight and clapped her hands, reaching out for Lauren's hand that held the chalk piece.
"I think she wants to eat it," Camila said to Lauren, making the woman laugh.
"I guess we have to watch her carefully then. Do you think you can be a good big sister and make sure Normani doesn't put any chalk in her mouth?"
"I watch her. I'm a good big sister," Camila promised, making Lauren laugh again.
"I know you are. Now, what else should we make Mani?"
"A 'ion!" Dinah insisted, jumping up from her patch of drawings and running over to Ally who was unsuspecting to her attack. Suddenly she had a little two year old on her lap and chalky hands grabbing her white shirt.
"You want a lion, baby?" Ally asked as she pressed a kiss to her daughter's cheek.
"'es p'ease," Dinah said, turning in her mama's lap so she could watch her draw.
Lauren looked to Camila who seemed to be thinking about something else to draw.
"Why don't we make a family portrait?" Lauren asked, making the girl look at her curiously. "Look. First, we need a house," the Latina explained, shuffling back a bit with Normani and beckoning Camila to come closer.
