"Oh no," I said. "You guys have got the wrong end of the stick. I can't represent the witches against Marcel!"

"Why not?" Sophie asked.

"Well, for one thing, I can't represent something that I don't belong to. I'm a vampire, remember?" I argued. These women were looking at me like I had come here with the express purpose of being their savior.

"You're connected to the witches," Jane-Anne responded. "Even if you can't practice magic."

"Aren't vampires and witches mortal enemies?" I asked. "Why would you even want me to help you?"

"Because, without magic, the witches can't do anything."

"You don't understand," I said. "I'm just here because I owe Klaus a debt for saving my brother's life. I'm not even supposed to be here!"

They looked at each other. "But, what if you are supposed to be here?"

I sighed. I wanted to help the witches, but I didn't even know Marcel. If he was anything to do with Klaus, the guy was bad news.

"What do you want me to do?" I asked them. "Kill him?"

"All we want is for witches to be able to practice magic in the Quarter," Sophie said.

"But how does he even know when you practice magic? I mean, surely you can do it without him noticing?"

Jane-Anne shook her head. "He has some kind of secret weapon. He's always one step ahead of us."

"Then I'm no match for him."

"What would Emily want?" Sophie asked. "If she knew that you could do something to help the witches, would she want you to help? Or to go back to being Klaus's lapdog?"

"I'm nobody's lapdog!" I argued. But she was right, and I knew it. If Emily were here right now, she'd be outraged that a vampire was stopping the witches from doing magic. She'd do everything in her power to put it right, and she'd want me to do the same.

"I can, maybe, try to talk to Marcel? See what he says?"

"Talking isn't going to do anything, you need to take action," Jane-Anne said.

"You know what the great thing about spending a lot of time with Klaus Mikaelson is?" I asked them rhetorically. "He teaches you to always look out for yourself. Of course I want to help the witches, but not at the expense of my life. I can promise to talk to him, but if he doesn't listen, there's not a lot else that I can do. I'm sorry."

They both looked down, disappointed.

"Just promise that you'll try," Sophie said. "Promise that you won't take no for an answer."

Looking at them, I could see how desperate they were, how much the lack of magic in their home was taking a toll on them. So what else could I do?

"I promise."

...

I walked back into the bar, looking for any signs of either Marcel or Klaus.

"They're in the back," a guy that I didn't recognize said.

"Excuse me?" I asked him.

"You're looking for Marcel and Klaus, right?" he asked.

"How do you know that?"

"I saw you come in with Klaus the first time." He held out his hand. "I'm Diego."

"Serena," I said. "Nice to meet you."

"What are you doing here with Klaus anyway?" he asked. "Don't tell me he managed to compel himself a friend?"
