My phone began to ring. I took it out of my pocket, noting the daggers that Damon was glaring at me. I'd said what I said in anger, but I meant it. I would sacrifice Damon over Stefan any day.
'Unknown Number' flashed on my screen. I answered, holding it up to my ear without speaking. I was too angry to have to pretend to be nice to cold-callers or telemarketers.
"Hello love," the voice on the other end of the line said.
"Where is he?!" I asked, breathing heavily.
"Where's who?" Klaus asked innocently.
"Don't fuck with me Klaus," I said. "I'm not running, I'm not going anywhere, you can use me in the ritual. But leave Steve alone."
"But you were planning to run, weren't you?" he asked. "Don't bother lying, Rebekah filled me in on your conversation."
"Bitch," I said under my breath, cursing Rebekah. "Who cares what I was going to do?! Stop using innocent people in your games."
"I have a big thing on trust," he said. "I need to know that you'll be there when I come tomorrow."
"Let him go," I commanded. "Or I'll find him. And then I'll never let you use me in the ritual. I promise. If I have to be on the run from you for the next century, I'll do it!"
"Give me the phone," Damon said, holding his hand out.
"What, so you can ruin everything?" I asked, my hand held over the receiver.
He snatched the phone from my hand, putting it to his ear.
"Listen Klaus," he said, his voice so low that Elena's human ears couldn't make it out. He left the room, walking so far away that all Stefan and I could hear was the occasional angry hiss.
"You didn't mean it, did you?" Elena asked me. "You're not telling Klaus to use Damon."
"What choice do we have? We know four vampires in this town, so it's either a Salvatore brother, Caroline or Alaric. Alaric saved my life once, Caroline has already become a really good friend, and he's only taking Stefan over my dead body."
"We can find another way. We can turn someone-"
"We can't just offer up a random person," Stefan said. "But we can't offer Damon to Klaus either."
"If we don't offer someone, Klaus is going to come straight for you," I told him.
"Maybe he should," Stefan said.
I rolled my eyes. "We really don't have time for the 'I was a ripper' pity party, bro."
"Well what else can we do?" Stefan asked. "I'll offer myself to Klaus and he'll leave everyone else alone."
"He has to kill me, Elena and a werewolf, probably Tyler," I reminded him. "You don't need to be added to that bloodbath."
"Oh God," Elena said, clutching her head and sitting on the sofa. Stefan went to her, concerned. "He's gonna kill us." Tears began to form in her eyes. "What about Jeremy? He can't lose anyone else. And Caroline and-"
"Bonnie!" I cut her off.
"What about her?" Stefan asked.
"Bonnie Bennett, the Bennett witch, a distant descendant of Emily Bennett, the Bennett witch who put the curse on Klaus."
"Are you saying that Bonnie will be able to help?" Stefan asked.
"Isn't it worth a try?" I asked as Damon came back into the room, my phone still clutched in his hand. "What happened? What did Klaus say?"
