"Elena, help Stefan," I said, not taking my eyes off of Harper. After a second of staring, I sprang into action, pulling out the wooden stakes that were stuck in Harper's legs, stopping him from leaving.

"How are you alive?" he asked weakly.

"Take a wild guess," I said, helping him up and wrapping one of his arms around my shoulder. "I'm a vampire."

"I've got Stefan," Elena said, struggling slightly. Slowly, we walked back the way we came with the guys in tow, walking towards Alaric's car.

"I just don't understand," I said. "Why would they take you guys in the first place? Especially you Stefan, what was the motive?"

As I said this, a vampire appeared before us. One that I knew all too well. Anna.

"Just let us go," Elena said. "No one has to get hurt."

"Actually Elena, someone is definitely gonna get hurt," I said, eyeing Anna. "Can you get Harper to the car too?"

"I can try," she said.

"Serena," Stefan said. "Don't do this."

"Go. To. The. Car," I said. "This bitch is gonna get what's coming to her."

I waited until they got past Anna before I spoke.

"What's the goal here? What are you doing?"

"I just wanted my mother," she said.

"You took her from the tomb. What gives you the excuse to kidnap my brother?"

"I didn't kidnap your brother," she said, a twisted smile forming on her face. "I mean, I told the others who you guys were, but I couldn't care less about the Salvatores."

"Then whose idea was it?" I asked.

Suddenly, I was hit from behind and knocked off my feet. I looked up to see a guy that I didn't recognize.

"You see Serena," Anna said. "Your brothers got my mom and all the other vampires locked in a tomb for over hundred years. I've been waiting over a century to pay them back, and this is the perfect way to do it. And who better to help me than a group of vampires who were left to desiccate at the hands of the founders?"

The guy quickly stabbed me in the stomach with a wooden stake, twisting it so that a piece broke off, gently scratching my ribcage.

"Ahh!" I yelled, gasping.

"But killing you would be too easy," she said. "I want you to suffer."

"I didn't do anything," I said between gasps. "I. Was. Human."

"I know, it's hilarious!" she said. "I was willing to let nature and old age take its course. But then I saw you at that party at the Boarding House, and I knew that it was fate."

The guy plunged the broken piece of wood into my shoulder, causing me to cry out in pain again.

"You're about to die Serena," Anna said. "Any last-" Before she could finish her sentence she fell to the ground, her bloody heart in the hand of my oldest brother.

"Leave," he said to the other vampire. "And take your friends with you."

"I don't think so pal," the guy said, gesturing behind Damon. He turned and saw a group of tomb vampires coming towards us. I ripped the piece of wood out of my shoulder and tried to stand, despite the wood that was still in my stomach.

"Can you fight?" Damon asked me.

"Sure," I lied breathlessly.

He looked over at me, worried. It was the first time in a century that I could recall the look on his face.
