"Magic isn't about floating feathers or doing locator spells," Davina informed me. "It's about natural power – the kind of power that builds from the inside."

We'd been sat together, talking magic and doing spells in a loft owned by Marcel for the last 4 hours. Klaus got bored and left after about 30 minutes.

"Right, inside power," I muttered. Davina Claire was a 19 year old brunette witch. After a few hours with her, I could tell that she was one of the most powerful women I'd ever met.

She giggled. "That doesn't help, does it?" she asked.

"It does!" I assured her. "I just want it to feel... natural."

"It doesn't?" she asked.

I shook my head. "I can feel nature, and I know that the powers are there, but even the simplest spell is hard. It's like sitting a test without studying."

"It takes practice," she assured me. "No witch wakes up and becomes great and powerful. We all work at it until we become the best that we can be. I'm still working at it."

"Yeah right," I scoffed. "You're Sabrina the Teenage Witch Goddess!"

She laughed. "I'm definitely not. But hey, you're a vampire-witch hybrid Goddess, so at least we have something in common!" I joined her in laughter, looking around the loft.

"Why does Marcel have you stuck up here anyway?" I asked her.

"I'm choosing to be here," she informed me. "Marcel saved my life, and because of that, I have all this power. So I'm helping him. Like you're doing with Klaus... except, Marcel isn't a psychopath."

"I'm not helping Klaus because I'm indebted to him," I told her. "He's my friend. That's all."

"How can you be friends with Klaus?" she asked.

"Hey!" I laughed off her comments. "No judging!"

"Sorry!" she said. "You're right, no judging. Witch and hybrid goddesses have to stick together!"

"Right!" I told her, before curiosity got the better of me. "So what are you helping Marcel with anyway?"

"He doesn't like witches doing magic in the Quarter," she said. "I use my powers to help him monitor that."

I frowned. "You mean, you help him to restrict the witches' magic?" When I first came here, I was outraged that Marcel was controlling the witches. Now I knew how.

"Only in the Quarter," she said. "And obviously, as a friend of Klaus's, you don't count."

"That's not the point," I said. "Don't you feel... guilty? I mean, you're going up against your supernatural family."

It was her turn to frown. "That 'supernatural family' tried to sacrifice me in a Harvest Ritual. Marcel saved me. They don't care about me, he does."

Her face went red, and she wouldn't look at me. As much as I wished the witches could do magic here, trying to sacrifice a teenager for their own gain was... beyond wrong. Because of aunt Emily, I'd always seen witches as the best of the best. Maybe, now that I actually was one, it was time to learn that some witches weren't good.

I took Davina's hand. "I'm so sorry that they did that to you," I told her.

She reached over and hugged me. "Thanks for coming here. It's been nice to have someone to talk to, besides Marcel."

"I'll be back again tomorrow," I promised. If Davina could help me to become a powerful witch, I'd be here for as long as it took.
